Contents

(a) (I.497r) [Late 1697.] Holograph copy: 'To the Honble the Knights Citizens & Burgesses in Parliam. assembled the humble Petition of William Chaloner Gent.' Petition against his imprisonment by the Mint officers, which he claims was to prevent him writing a book exposing the corruption of the Mint.

Printed in NC, 4, 259-60.

(b) (I.497v-498) [Early 1698.] Holograph draft: 'An Answer to Mr. Chaloner's Petition'. Chaloner's accusations against the Mint were made as part of a conspiracy to get control of the Mint itself and use its equipment for false coining. Newton had never heard of his projected book against the Mint until he read the petition. Chaloner was arrested for counterfeiting and forgery.

Printed in NC, 4: 261-3.
