(b) (Mint 19/1/497v-498) [Early 1698.] Holograph draft: 'An Answer to Mr. Chaloner's Petition'. Chaloner's accusations against the Mint were made as part of a conspiracy to get control of the Mint itself and use its equipment for false coining. Newton had never heard of his projected book against the Mint until he read the petition. Chaloner was arrested for counterfeiting and forgery.
