                        <p>SL245, described in the Sotheby catalogue as <hi rend="italic">c.</hi> 300,000 words on 975 pp., was bought at the Sotheby sale by Gabriel Wells for £48 and sold to Yahuda on 1 Aug. 1936 for the sale price plus 15%. On 24 May 1949, Yahuda wrote to the London dealer Heinrich Eisemann, 'As to lot 245 the new arrangement and replacement of the pages resulted in 1,530 pages instead of 975 pages as many pages had to be taken out from other lots. But for this manuscript I have a customer who wants to pay a much higher price than $3,800 suggested by you.' If this was true, the prospective buyer's desire to part with his or her cash presumably waned. There must subsequently have been further reordering of the manuscript as the present Yahuda Ms. 7 amounts to nowhere near 1,530 pp.</p>

<p xml:id="par1">Athanasius in his Epistle to Marcellinus concerning the book of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Psa<supplied reason="damage">lms</supplied> <lb xml:id="l1"/>introduces an old man – – – – – – – &amp; cannot bear them. This was the doctrine of <lb xml:id="l2"/>Athanasius <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> in the name of the old man he recommended to Marcellinus. <lb xml:id="l3"/>&amp; this doctrine he imbibed in his you<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del>th. For he wrote <del type="strikethrough">this epistle &amp;</del> his <lb xml:id="l4"/>exposition upon the Psalms &amp; this Epistle to Marcelline in</p>
<p xml:id="par2">Athanasius was of opinion from his youth that the souls of the <lb xml:id="l5"/>Prophets &amp; dead saints had knowledge of humane affairs &amp; heard our <lb xml:id="l6"/>prayers. For in his Epistle – – – – – doctrine <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>f Athanasius <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he imbibed <lb xml:id="l7"/> in his youth &amp; in the name of the old man <lb type="intentional" xml:id="l8"/><del type="blockStrikethrough">&amp; this was done in the life time of Athanasius<del type="strikethrough">; for he <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">who</add></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; with his consent. For he</add> had an Oration upon <lb xml:id="l9"/>the<add place="inline" indicator="no">se</add> 40 martyrs. <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <unclear reason="del" cert="high">i</unclear></del> This Oration is not ye<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">a</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add> published but <del type="strikethrough">was seen by</del> <lb xml:id="l10"/>Gerard Vossius saw it in the library of Cardinal Ascanius in Italy as he <lb xml:id="l11"/>mentions in <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">is</add> commentary upon the Oration of Ephræm Syrus on the sa<del type="over" cert="medium">n</del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>e <lb xml:id="l12"/>40 martyrs</del></p>
<p xml:id="par3">In the reign of Iulian when the <del type="strikethrough">bones</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">reliques</add> of Iohn the baptist were brought to <lb xml:id="l13"/>Athanasius, <del type="strikethrough">he hid them saith s</del> he hid them <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">saith Ruffin</add> in the hollowed wall of a church <lb xml:id="l14"/><del type="strikethrough">prophesying that by a profetic spirit</del> prophesying that they would be usefull <lb xml:id="l15"/>to a future generation. <add place="inline infralinear" indicator="no" cert="high">And in the reign of Theodosius the Ægyptians erected <lb xml:id="l16"/>to the<unclear reason="over" cert="high">m</unclear> a very sumptuous temple.</add></p>
<p xml:id="par4">In the life of Antony written in the beginning of the reign of Valentinian <lb xml:id="l17"/>&amp; Valens, Athanasius attributes wonderfull effects to <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">f</unclear></del> the signe of the cross <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no">&amp;</add> <lb xml:id="l18"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">&amp; holy oyle</del></add> tells <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">many</add> stories of <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">apparitions of Devils &amp; of</add> the souls of dead men <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> Devils app</del></add> <del type="strikethrough">appearing &amp;</del> ascending up to heaven, &amp; <lb xml:id="l19"/>in the end of the boo<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">k</add> <del type="strikethrough">introduces Anto</del>, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">he</add> tells how Antony when he was <lb xml:id="l20"/>dying (that is in the year 356) <del type="cancelled">ad</del> exhorted those about him <del type="strikethrough">to adhere <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">principally</add> to <lb xml:id="l21"/>Christ &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">then to</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> saints that afte</del> in this manner: <hi rend="underline">Do you <del type="strikethrough">adhere in the first</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">take care <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">to</unclear></del> to adhere</add> to christ <lb xml:id="l22"/>in the first place &amp; then to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> saints, that after death they may receive you <lb xml:id="l23"/>as frien<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">d</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add> &amp; acquaintan<del type="over" cert="medium">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>e into the eternal tabernacles.</hi> And <del type="strikethrough">after</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">when</add> the church <lb xml:id="l24"/>of Alexandria <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">(the metropolis of saint worship)</add> sent re<del type="over" cert="low"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">a</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">l</add>i<choice><orig></orig><reg>que</reg></choice>s into all the world <del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">[</add><del type="strikethrough"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/>d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add>or <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Chris &amp; af</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">that they might</add> thereby, saith <lb xml:id="l25"/>Chrysostom, procur<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><del type="strikethrough">ng</del> glory with all men <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> to their city &amp; decl<del type="over" cert="low">r</del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>r<del type="over">in</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><del type="strikethrough">g</del> her the metro<lb xml:id="l26"/>polis of the whole earth;<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add> &amp; the Church of Antioch following her example, <lb xml:id="l27"/>sent the reliques of the 40 martyrs to <del type="cancelled">the</del> other Churches: Athanasius <add place="supralinear marginRight" indicator="yes">Basil &amp; Eph<supplied reason="omitted" cert="high">r</supplied>æm S.</add> <lb xml:id="l28"/><del type="strikethrough">composed an Oration on these 40 martyrs., <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">celebrated these 40 martyrs <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">an</unclear></del> Oration<add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add>.</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Th<del type="over">is</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> Oration of Athanasius</add> is not yet published; But Gerard <lb xml:id="l29"/>Vossius saw it in MS in the library of Cardinal Ascanius in Italy as he mentions <lb xml:id="l30"/>in his commentary on the Oration of Ephræm Syrus upon the same martyrs.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">And by this early encouragement of <del type="strikethrough">saints worship <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="blotDel" cert="low">in</unclear></del> Egypt</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the veneration of saints</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">their worship</add> was soon esta<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l31"/>blished in Egypt. For Palladius going into Egypt in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year 388 to visit the mo<lb xml:id="l32"/>nasteries . . . . . . . . <foreign xml:lang="lat">ejusmodi tamen Deos fert tellus.</foreign></p>

<p xml:id="par7">By what has <choice><sic>bee</sic><corr>been</corr></choice> cited out of Basil, the two Gregories &amp; Ephræm <lb xml:id="l33"/>you may understand that Saint worship was established in the east among <lb xml:id="l34"/>the Catholicks before the year 378. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">th<del type="over">at</del><add place="over" indicator="no">is</add> being the year in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Basil &amp; Ephræm died.</add> Hilary coming from <del type="strikethrough">those parts</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the east</add> <lb xml:id="l35"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year 360 <del type="strikethrough">or 361</del> brought <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled">it</del></add> with him into Gallia <del type="strikethrough">[both <choice><sic>Monckey</sic><corr>Monckery</corr></choice> &amp; <lb xml:id="l36"/>the invocation of Saints. <p xml:id="par18">By this it is manifest that <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">before th<supplied reason="damage">e ye</supplied>ar 378</add> the Orations &amp; <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">lif</unclear></del> Sermons upon the saints went much <lb xml:id="l149"/>beyond the bounds of <del type="strikethrough">orat</del> mere oratorical flourishes &amp; that the common people of <lb xml:id="l150"/>the Catholicks <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in the east</add> were already <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">generally</add> corrupted with Saint-worship. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> And its further observa<lb xml:id="l151"/>ble <add place="inline" indicator="no" cert="high"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice></add> the reliques of these 40 martyrs which are <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">here</add> said to be sent into many <lb xml:id="l152"/>regions &amp; to adorn many countries, were sent <del type="strikethrough">into Egypt <del type="cancelled">b<gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> in the life time</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">from Antioch to those places <del type="strikethrough">&amp; <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">particularl</unclear></del></add> <lb xml:id="l153"/>before the year 373. It was with this designe therefore that <lb xml:id="l484"/>Constantius supprest the  <del type="strikethrough">schismatical</del> proceedings of the Bishop of Rome &amp; his adherents <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">for gaining the universal <choice><abbr>B<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Bishop</expan></choice>ric</add> <lb xml:id="l485"/>&amp; caused the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">western</add> clergy to <del type="strikethrough">subscribe</del> acknowledge the independent <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; supreme</add> authority of the eastern Councils <lb xml:id="l486"/>in judicial matters over her own members, &amp; banished those who refused <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to acknowledg it</add> as <lb xml:id="l487"/><del type="strikethrough">factious &amp; schismatical <del type="cancelled">spirits</del> <del type="strikethrough">behavour</del></del> disturbers of the peace of the Chur<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l488"/>ch<del type="cancelled">es.</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of Christ</add>  It was therefore <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">out of love to the Christian religion &amp;</add> with a designe to <del type="cancelled">quiet</del> put a stop to the growing <lb xml:id="l489"/>schisms &amp; to <del type="strikethrough">quiet</del> restore the peace of the churches &amp; reduce <del type="cancelled">to</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">them to</add> <del type="cancelled">a peaceable</del> <lb xml:id="l490"/><del type="over">&amp;</del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add> flourishing condition, that <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">h</unclear></del> Constantius supprest the proceedings of the <lb xml:id="l491"/>Bishop of Rome &amp; his adherents for compassing the universal bishopric &amp; <lb xml:id="l492"/>caused the western Clergy. And that he acted out of <del type="strikethrough">love</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">affection</add> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Christian religion <lb xml:id="l493"/><del type="strikethrough">may be gathered also</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">is further manifest</add> from the mischief <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> he did to the religion of the heathen <lb xml:id="l494"/><del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">T</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">F</add>or Libanius the Orator a heathen thus complains of him: It is Constantiu<supplied reason="omitted">s</supplied> <lb xml:id="l495"/>&amp; his reign <del type="over"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del><add place="over" indicator="no">whi</add>ch having received the sparks of the wil fr<add place="inline" indicator="no">o</add>m his father <lb xml:id="l496"/>carried on the work to a great fire. For he spoiled the Gods of their <del type="strikethrough">riches</del> <lb xml:id="l497"/>wealth but this Emperor threw down their Temples to the grownd, &amp; <lb xml:id="l498"/>abrogating all the sacred laws gave himself to whom we know.</p>
<p xml:id="par50">The controversy about <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> universal bishopric being thus composed <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no" cert="high">&amp; the</add> <lb xml:id="l499"/><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">of</unclear></del> <add place="marginLeft supralinear" indicator="no">&amp; the peace &amp;</add> discipl<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ine</add> of the Church <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">catholick</add> restored: things continued in this state till the year <lb xml:id="l500"/>3<del type="over">9</del><add place="over" indicator="no">5</add>7, &amp; then a new controversy brake <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">w</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ou</add>t between the eastern &amp; western <lb xml:id="l501"/>churches about <del type="cancelled">the use of</del> the language <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of the sons <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">being</unclear></add>, <foreign xml:lang="gre">μιᾶς οὐσίας</foreign> &amp; <foreign xml:lang="gre">μίας ὑποστάσεως</foreign> <lb xml:id="l502"/><hi rend="underline">of one usia &amp; one hypostasis</hi> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the father. For this <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">lan</unclear></del> not being <lb xml:id="l503"/>the language of the Council of Nice but <del type="cancelled">F</del> tending to Mon<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">c</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>anism <lb xml:id="l504"/>&amp; Sabellianism: the Greeks <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">for putting a stop to the growth of those errors</add> thought it necessary to abrogate it. And be<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l505"/>cause it had its rise from the language of <foreign xml:lang="gre">ὁμόούσιος</foreign> &amp; that language was <lb xml:id="l506"/>not in scripture nor received by tradition nor understood by the people <del type="cancelled">but</del> <lb xml:id="l507"/>but <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">had been</add> used by Paul of Samosat &amp; some other hereticks &amp; rejected by the <del type="cancelled">pe<choice><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">o</unclear><unclear cert="medium">a</unclear></choice><lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l508"/></del> Council of Antioch <del type="cancelled">&amp; <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> met against Paul</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in the third century</add>: the Greeks &amp; those of their <lb xml:id="l509"/>opinion in the west rejected the use of the word usia <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> its compounds in seve<lb xml:id="l510"/>ral Councils as was said above, &amp; did it with an universal success. For, saith Greg. <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">Nazian.</fw><pb xml:id="p007v" n="7v"/><fw type="pag" place="topLeft">7v</fw> Nazianzen, if you except a very few who either by reason of the obscurity <lb xml:id="l511"/>of their name were sleighted, or by their vertue resisted (who<del type="cancelled"><choice><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">se</unclear><unclear cert="low">m</unclear></choice></del> were <lb xml:id="l512"/>requite to be left <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to Israel</add> as a seed &amp; root that <del type="strikethrough">she might</del> by the influences of <lb xml:id="l513"/>the Spirit she might flourish again &amp; be restored to life) all complied <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l514"/>the time. This was the only difference between them that some fell <lb xml:id="l515"/>into<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> that fraud sooner &amp; others later, &amp; some <del type="cancelled">were</del> were captains <lb xml:id="l516"/>&amp; leaders in the impiety &amp; others were placed in the second order: being <lb xml:id="l517"/>either struck <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> fear or overcome with gain &amp; advantage or ensnared <lb xml:id="l518"/>with flatteries or lastly circumvented by ignorance, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is the least of the <lb xml:id="l519"/>offences. <p xml:id="par51">This was the state of things in the end of the reign of Constantius. And in <lb xml:id="l520"/>this state the<del type="cancelled">y</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Church</add> continued till the reign of Iovian excepting the persecution that she <lb xml:id="l521"/>suffered in the reign of Iulian the apostate. Iovian reigned but seven months <lb xml:id="l522"/>&amp; <del type="strikethrough">in the reign of</del> his success<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>rs Valentinian &amp; Valens <del type="cancelled">the <unclear reason="del" cert="low">t</unclear> <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">Liberius</unclear> b</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in the beginning of their reign</add> communicated <lb xml:id="l523"/>the one <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">Eudoxius at Constant</del> Auxentius at Millain &amp; the other <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">at</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice></add> Eudoxius at <lb xml:id="l524"/>Constantinople. But <del type="cancelled">Atha</del> the excommunicated Bishops Athanasius <del type="cancelled">&amp; his <unclear reason="del" cert="low">j</unclear></del> in Egypt &amp; <lb xml:id="l525"/>Hilary &amp; Eusebius Vercellensis in Gallia &amp; Italy drew <gap reason="blotDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/> off <del type="strikethrough">to their party <del type="strikethrough">what</del></del> <del type="strikethrough">as</del> many <lb xml:id="l526"/> of the bishops <del type="cancelled">to</del> <del type="cancelled">th</del> to their party <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">pretending that the Ch. Cath. was Arian for abolishing the use of the word usia <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> it comp.</add> &amp; <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">Liberi</unclear></del> th<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">e</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> <del type="over">b</del><add place="over" indicator="no">B</add>ishop of Rome for recovering his pretences to <lb xml:id="l527"/>the universal bishopric <del type="strikethrough">separated fr</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">first</del></add> favoured their proceedings &amp; <del type="cancelled">then</del> joyned with them in <lb xml:id="l528"/>communion. For he had no other way to gain the Ecclesiastical supremacy then by <lb xml:id="l529"/>condemning th<del type="over" cert="low">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>t Church as erronous &amp; heretical <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> in the late Councils of Biters <lb xml:id="l530"/>Millain &amp; Aquileia had condemned &amp; baffled his pretences to that dominion <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">And the emperor Valentinian went over to this party</add>. The <lb xml:id="l531"/>Macedonians <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled">&amp; the</del></add> also <del type="strikethrough">joyned with th</del> in the east joyned <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in communion</add> with the Church of Rome <del type="strikethrough">in co<unclear reason="del" cert="low">m</unclear></del> for <lb xml:id="l532"/>reestablishing the Nicene decree that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Son was consubstantial to the father. <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">And then Emperor Valentinian went over to the same party</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">as hath been explained</add></add> But Athana<lb xml:id="l533"/>sius having gone a step further &amp; declared that the holy Ghost was <del type="strikethrough">also</del> consubstantial <lb xml:id="l534"/>to th<choice><unclear reason="del over" cert="medium"><del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>m</unclear><unclear cert="medium">e<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add></unclear></choice> both &amp; that this doct<del type="over">ine</del><add place="over" indicator="no">rin</add>e was included in the Nicene faith &amp; to deny it was Arria<lb xml:id="l535"/>nism: the bishop of Rome &amp; the western Churches, <del type="over">as</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A. C</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> 373 declared for the opinion of <lb xml:id="l536"/>Athanasius, <del type="cancelled">by</del> &amp; wrote to the Macedonians to come over to this opinion, &amp; in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> years 378 &amp; <lb xml:id="l537"/>379 <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">upon the death of the Emperor Valens</add> it began to be preached openly in all the east <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as was mentioned above</add> &amp; <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled">in</del> after two years more was esta</del> <lb xml:id="l538"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">[</add><choice><sic>blished</sic><corr>established</corr></choice> the next year by an Imperial <del type="strikethrough">decree</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Edict</add> &amp; the year following by the authority of the <lb xml:id="l539"/>Council of Constantinople usually called the second general Council<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp;</add> about a year &amp; <lb xml:id="l540"/>six months after the death of Valens the new Emperor Theodosius by the <lb xml:id="l541"/>following Edict dated Feb 28 commanded all — – – . . . . as old as this law.</p>

And whilst all those <lb xml:id="l557"/>of this new.  These are the men who set up the worship of the saints <lb xml:id="l558"/>And seing they were by this law of the Roman Empire called catholick <lb xml:id="l559"/>Christians &amp; taught in their Creed to believe <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">in</unclear></del> this holy Catholick Church &amp; <lb xml:id="l560"/>were baptized into this faith<del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">:</add> we may be allowed to reccon the Roman <lb xml:id="l561"/>Catholick Church as old as this Law.</p>
<p xml:id="par55">But <del type="strikethrough">yet</del> this law being not sufficient to influence the minds of the <lb xml:id="l562"/>people without the authority of a Council: the Emperor Theodosius called a <lb xml:id="l563"/>general Council to meet at Constantinople the next year.</p>

The man of <lb xml:id="l570"/>sin <del type="strikethrough">exalteth</del> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">y</unclear> exalt</del> opposeth &amp; exalteth himself above all that is called God, <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> from his <lb xml:id="l571"/>opposing is called Antichrist that is the adversary of Christ<del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">:</add> &amp; the <del type="cancelled">the</del> Dragon &amp; Beast <lb xml:id="l572"/>&amp; Whore &amp; False Prophet do all agree in persecuting the saints, &amp; particularly the Beast <lb xml:id="l573"/>&amp; kings of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> earth &amp; their army are <del type="strikethrough">all of</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">at length</add> gathered together to make war against <del type="cancelled">him</del> <lb xml:id="l574"/>the Word of God &amp; his army. The character of Antichrist is that he should deny the <lb xml:id="l575"/>father &amp; the son: &amp; in the reign of the Beast all men whose names are not written <lb xml:id="l576"/>in the book of life wonder after him &amp; receiv<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><del type="strikethrough">ng</del> his mark &amp; instead of worshipping God <lb xml:id="l577"/>&amp; Christ worship the Beast &amp; his Image: &amp; to worship a false god is in the language of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l578"/>scripture to forsake &amp; deny the true one Iosh. 24.15, 16, 27. Iob. 31.26, 27, 28.</p>
<p xml:id="par57"><del type="blockStrikethrough"><del type="strikethrough">I know that Christians have generally a great opinion of Christian <del type="strikethrough">Churches</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">nations</add> as if they <lb xml:id="l579"/>were much better then heathens or Mahometans: but they should consider</del></del></p>
<p xml:id="par58"><del type="cancelled">T</del> When the Apostle Iohn <del type="cancelled">to</del> wrote thus to the <del type="strikethrough">primitive</del> Churches: <hi rend="underline">Little Children <lb xml:id="l580"/>it is the last time, &amp; as <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> ye have heard that Antichrist shall come <del type="cancelled">so</del>, even now there <lb xml:id="l581"/>are many Antichrists whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from <lb xml:id="l582"/>us but they were not off us: for if they had been of us they would have continued with us <lb xml:id="l583"/>but they went out that they might be made manifest that they were not all off us.</hi> <lb xml:id="l584"/>the<gap reason="blotDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/> meaning is that <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">t</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>any hereticks then separated from the Church &amp; should <lb xml:id="l585"/>conti<del type="over" cert="medium">n</del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>ue to separate untill <del type="cancelled">the great</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><add place="inline" indicator="no" cert="high">a specious</add> <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> gen<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">&amp;</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>ral</add> heresy should arise &amp; <del type="strikethrough">separate</del> make a great <lb xml:id="l586"/>separation &amp; <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by its numbers</add> prevail over the Church. <del type="blockStrikethrough">For the primitive Christians gave the <lb xml:id="l587"/>name of Antichrists to all hereticks who separated from the church, especially if <lb xml:id="l588"/>they erred in their doctrines <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or practises</add> about God &amp; Christ.</del> For all schismaticks being enemies <lb xml:id="l589"/>to the Church, the <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">Ch</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Apostle Iohn &amp; the</add> primitive Christians called them Antichrists that is enemies to Christ <lb xml:id="l590"/><del type="strikethrough">&amp; by the great Antichrist understood nothing else then</del> especially if they erred in their <lb xml:id="l591"/>opinions or practises <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> relation to God or Christ: <del type="cancelled">Fo</del> <del type="over">A</del><add place="over" indicator="no" cert="medium">&amp;</add> by the great Antichrist they <lb xml:id="l592"/>understood nothing else then <del type="strikethrough">the great &amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">a</add> general <del type="cancelled">schism</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">heresy</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> by its plausible appearance <lb xml:id="l593"/>should deceive &amp; draw away the greatest part of Christians <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; make a separation so great as</add> by its numbers <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to</add> over<lb xml:id="l594"/>come the true Church of God. For Cyprian <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Bishop of Carthage</add> speaking of the baptism of such <lb xml:id="l595"/>hereticks as had not yet been baptised into the true Church; saith, <hi rend="underline"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Hæreticos <lb xml:id="l596"/>secundum Evangelicam &amp; Apostolicam constitutionem adversarios Christi <lb xml:id="l597"/>Antichristos appellatos, quando ad Ecclesiam venerint, unico Ecclesiæ <lb xml:id="l598"/>baptismate baptisandos esse ut possint fieri de adversarijs amici et de Anti<lb xml:id="l599"/>christis Christiani</foreign></hi>. And in another place describing the time &amp; manner of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l600"/>coming of the great Antichrist <del type="cancelled">he saith</del> whose coming was then expected he <lb xml:id="l601"/>saith. <foreign xml:lang="lat">Cavenda sunt autem non solum</foreign> – – – – – – – – ma<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">k</add>e them err &amp; fall <lb xml:id="l602"/>away &amp; under the name of Christi<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">c</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ns become the great Antichrist. While the Roman <lb xml:id="l603"/>Empire continued heathen there w<del type="over">h</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add>re many Antichrists that is many schisms made <lb xml:id="l604"/>by hereticks but the true church being far more numerous prevailed against them all. <lb xml:id="l605"/>And in these Antichrists the mystery of iniquity began to work in the days of the Apostles <lb xml:id="l606"/>&amp; was to work untill there<del type="cancelled"><hi rend="superscript"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></hi></del> should come a falling away or great Apostacy called <del type="cancelled">by</del> <lb xml:id="l607"/><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">T</unclear></del> the Man of sin &amp; the Antichrist, &amp; the Churches should no longer endure sound <lb xml:id="l608"/>doctrine but after their own lusts should heap to themselves teachers having <lb xml:id="l609"/>itching ears, <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">&amp;</add> turn away their ears from the truth &amp; be turned unto fables <lb xml:id="l610"/>But this man of sin was not to appear till that <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> letted should be taken out of <lb xml:id="l611"/>the way. And that <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> letted was the Roman Empire according to the tradition of the <lb xml:id="l612"/>primitive Christians, or, as Cyprian explains, the heathen <del type="over">r</del><add place="over" indicator="no">R</add>oman Empire. When the <lb xml:id="l613"/>Christian religion should prevail over the heathen &amp; the Devill should see his idols <lb xml:id="l614"/>cast down &amp; temples demolished then <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"> (according to Cyprian)</add> he should insinuate himself into the Christi<lb xml:id="l615"/>an Churches corrupt the truth &amp; divide the unity of the Church by making a schism<unclear reason="blot" cert="low">.</unclear> <lb xml:id="l616"/>This was the expectation of the primitive Christians &amp; it came to pass exactly. For when the <lb xml:id="l617"/><del type="strikethrough">Western Empire</del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">Christian religion</add> by the victor<del type="over">y</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ie</add>s of Constantine the great <del type="strikethrough">became Chr</del> prevailed over the <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">heathen</fw><pb xml:id="p009r" n="9r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">9r</fw> heathen, the Christian Churches by the flowing in of <del type="cancelled">heath</del> hy<supplied reason="damage" cert="high">pocri</supplied>tical heathens became <lb xml:id="l618"/>in a short time exceeding vicious, idolized the signe of the Cross <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; things consecra<supplied reason="damage" cert="high">ted</supplied> <del type="cancelled"><supplied reason="damage" cert="medium">wit</supplied><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">h</unclear> it</del> &amp; reliques</add> &amp; invoked the da<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ed</add> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">&amp;</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l619"/>composing a religion mixed of the christian &amp; the heathen <gap reason="blot" extent="1" unit="chars"/> as has been shewed <lb xml:id="l620"/>above. And if the placing of <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> supernatura<add place="inline" indicator="no">l</add><unclear reason="hand" cert="low">-</unclear> vertue in words &amp; figuers &amp; ceremonies <lb xml:id="l621"/>&amp; things consecrated &amp; reliques &amp; images &amp; invocations of dead men be abominable <lb xml:id="l622"/>actions of the same kind with charms &amp; magic &amp; sorcery &amp; idolatry &amp; if Christian <lb xml:id="l623"/>sorcerers &amp; Christian idolaters be the worst of hereticks: then the Roman Empire <lb xml:id="l624"/>before the end of the fourth century became very <del type="cancelled">he</del> erroneus &amp; heretical, that <lb xml:id="l625"/>is, in the language of Cyprian &amp; the primitive Christians, it became very antichristian.</p>
<p xml:id="par59">And at the same time that <del type="cancelled">it</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">a great part of the Church</add> became vicious <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">erroneus</add> &amp; idolatrous, it became <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">also</add> schismatical <lb xml:id="l626"/>For in the reign of Valentinian &amp; Valens the <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">L</unclear></del> Churches of the Latine Empire <lb xml:id="l627"/>separated from the Churches of the Greek Empire. <del type="blockStrikethrough">Pa<del type="over">l</del><add place="over" indicator="no">u</add>l of Samosat had taught that <lb xml:id="l628"/>the Son was <foreign xml:lang="gre">ὁμοούσιος</foreign> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> father, that is, that the father &amp; son were two substances <lb xml:id="l629"/>of one kind or nature: for so the word <foreign xml:lang="gre"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ὁμ</add>οούσιος</foreign> <del type="strikethrough">signified in those days</del> has always signi<lb xml:id="l630"/>fied among the Greeks. If it be applied to bodies it signifies two <del type="strikethrough">substances</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">bodies</del> substances</add> taken out <lb xml:id="l631"/>of one mass, &amp; this is the proper signification. If it be applied to spirits it signifies two <lb xml:id="l632"/>homogeneal <del type="cancelled">sp</del> substances without implying that they were taken out of one mass. The <lb xml:id="l633"/>Council of Antioch <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> convened voluntarily to examin <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">hi</unclear></del> Paul of Samoset <lb xml:id="l634"/>decreed that the son ought not to be called <foreign xml:lang="gre">ὁμοούσιος</foreign> to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> father &amp; their decrees <lb xml:id="l635"/><choice><sic>againt</sic><corr>against</corr></choice> Paul were communicated to all the Churches &amp; particularly to the Bishops <lb xml:id="l636"/>of Rome and Alexandria &amp; agreed to without any dispute.</del> The Council of Anti<lb xml:id="l637"/>och convened against Paul of Samosat <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">A. Can. 9.</add> <hi rend="underline">Those of the Church are not allowed to go into the cœmeteries <lb xml:id="l708"/>or Martyries (as they are called) of hereticks for the sake of prayer</hi> or <lb xml:id="l709"/><del type="strikethrough">worship</del> <hi rend="underline">recovery of health: <del type="strikethrough">upon pain of excommunication</del> but such <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as go,</add> if they <lb xml:id="l710"/>be of the faithful, shal be excommunicated for a time</hi>. Can. 34 <hi rend="underline"><del type="over">T</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add> Christian <lb xml:id="l711"/>must not leave the martyrs of Christ &amp; go to fals martyrs that <lb xml:id="l712"/>is to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> martyrs of hereticks. For these are alien from God. And hence came the <lb xml:id="l725"/>custome of translating the bodies of the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">saints &amp;</add> martyrs into <del type="strikethrough">those</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">new</del></add> Churches <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> were new <lb xml:id="l726"/>built after this Persecution [of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> there are <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">divers</add> instances in the reign of Constantius] <lb xml:id="l727"/><del type="strikethrough">&amp; his successors.</del> &amp; of dedicating the<add place="inline" indicator="no">se</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">new</add> Churches to th<del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><del type="cancelled">se</del> saints <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">buried in them</add>: all <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">gave</add> occasion<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del> to <lb xml:id="l728"/>the Emperor Iulian <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">(as Cyrill relates)</add> <del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">r</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>o accuse the Christians in this manner. <hi rend="underline">You have filled <lb xml:id="l729"/>all places</hi>, saith he, <hi rend="underline">with sepulchres &amp; monuments al<del type="over">l</del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>hough you are no where <lb xml:id="l730"/>bidden to prostrate your selves to sepulchres &amp; to respect them officiously</hi>. And <lb xml:id="l731"/>a little after: <hi rend="underline">Since Iesus said that sepulchres are full of filthiness <lb xml:id="l732"/>how do you invoke God upon them</hi>. And again: <hi rend="underline">To that ancient dead man</hi> <lb xml:id="l733"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">[</add><choice><abbr><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">vi</add><del type="over">[</del><add place="over" indicator="no">z</add><hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>videlicet</expan></choice> Iesus] <hi rend="underline">you have added <del type="cancelled">oth</del> new dead men</hi>. And in another place he saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l734"/>If Christians had adhered to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> precepts of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Hebrews, <hi rend="underline">they would have wor<lb xml:id="l735"/>shipped one God instead of many &amp; not a man or rather not many unhap<lb xml:id="l736"/>py men</hi>. In Egypt this superstition <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">towards the dead</add> seems to have advanced faster <lb xml:id="l737"/>then in other places. For Antony the Monk who died in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year 358, <lb xml:id="l738"/>complained that it was then grown customary among the Egyptians <lb xml:id="l739"/><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">pr</unclear></del> – – – – – – private families. <note type="editorial">This seems to match, or be a revision of, the first paragraph of f. 10r.</note>  <del type="cancelled">And <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">now t</unclear></del> You have heard above <lb xml:id="l740"/>how some Christians went to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Cœmeteries for <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the advantag <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">of</add> devotion &amp;</add> health presently after <lb xml:id="l741"/>Dioclesian's persecution, &amp; it seems this opinion workt among Christians <lb xml:id="l742"/>till it gained a general belief &amp; made a very great noise. For <lb xml:id="l743"/>Hilary in his book against Constantius written in the fift year <lb xml:id="l744"/>of his banishment A. C. 361 makes this mention of what was then <lb xml:id="l745"/>done in the east. <foreign xml:lang="lat">Sine martyrio – – – – – –</foreign> This was about the year <lb xml:id="l746"/>384. In the year 388 Palladius – - - - - - - - - that is before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year 381. And since <lb xml:id="l747"/>the Egyptians preserved the bodies of the Saints &amp; Martyrs &amp; kept them not <lb xml:id="l748"/>only in their Temples but even in their private houses <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">upon beds above ground</add> &amp; <del type="strikethrough">Alexandria was at <lb xml:id="l749"/>this time eminent</del> abounding <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> more then sufficed them for <del type="strikethrough">their private</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">their own</add> uses <lb xml:id="l750"/>sent them into all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world &amp; Alexandria <del type="over" cert="medium">w</del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>ecame eminent above all other <lb xml:id="l751"/>cities for dispersing these miracle-working reliques of the martyrs, so as on <lb xml:id="l752"/>this account to aquire glory <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> all men &amp; manifest her self to be the Metro<lb xml:id="l753"/>p<del type="cancelled">l</del>olis of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> world; we may reccon that these miracles <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">were cryed up</add> as early in Egypt as <lb xml:id="l754"/>in Syria &amp; <del type="strikethrough">were thence propag</del> were propagated <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">into all the <del type="strikethrough">world</del> Empire</add> from Egypt &amp; Syria &amp; <lb xml:id="l755"/>chiefly from Ægypt.</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par63">Gregory of Nyssen tells us that <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">after the Persecution of Decius,</add> Gregory bishop of Neocæsarea in Pontus <lb xml:id="l756"/><hi rend="underline">instituted, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">amongst all people</add> as an addition &amp; corrollary of <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled"><choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">the</add> study</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">devotion</add> towards God, that festival <lb xml:id="l757"/>days &amp; assemblies should be celebrated to them who had contended <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">warred</del></add> for the <lb xml:id="l758"/>faith,</hi> that is, <del type="cancelled">for</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">to</add> the <choice><sic><del type="over" cert="low">m</del><add place="over" indicator="no">M</add>artys</sic><corr>Martyrs</corr></choice>. And adds this reason for the institution. <hi rend="underline">When <lb xml:id="l759"/>he observed that the simple &amp; unskilfull multitude, by reason of corporal <lb xml:id="l760"/>delights remained in the error of idols; that the principal thing might <lb xml:id="l761"/>be corrected among them, namely that instead of their vain worship &amp; <lb xml:id="l762"/>superstition they might turn their eys upon God: he per<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">p</unclear></del>mitted <del type="strikethrough">them</del> <lb xml:id="l763"/>t<del type="over" cert="high">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>at at the memories of the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">holy</add> Martyrs they might make merry &amp;</hi> <lb xml:id="l764"/><hi rend="doubleUnderline">delight themselves &amp; be resolved into joy</hi>. <del type="cancelled">At</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">In</add> the same <del type="strikethrough">time</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">persecution of Decius</add> Cyprian <del type="strikethrough">cele<lb xml:id="l765"/>brated the memories of the Martyrs in Afric</del> <choice><sic>&amp;</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> <del type="cancelled">a lit</del> <choice><sic>Felix Bishop of Rome <lb xml:id="l766"/>a little after</sic><corr type="delText"/></choice> <add place="interlinear" indicator="no">ordered the <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">memories or</unclear></del> passions of the Martyrs <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in Afric</add> to be registered in order to celebrate their memoirs annually <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> oblations &amp; sacrifices And Felix Bishop of Rome a little after, as Platina relates</add> <del type="strikethrough">ordered that</del> <foreign xml:lang="lat"><hi rend="underline">Martyrum gloriæ consulens constituit ut quotannis <lb xml:id="l767"/>sacrificia eorum nomine celebrarentur</hi>. Platina in Felice.</foreign> <del type="strikethrough">These were the begin<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l768"/>nings of</del> By this means the Christians increased much in number &amp; decreased as <lb xml:id="l769"/>much in vertue untill they were purged &amp; made white by the Persecution of Dio<lb xml:id="l770"/>clesian. And this was the first step made in the Christian religion towards the veneration <lb xml:id="l771"/>of the Martyrs <del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">[</add><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp;</add> tho it did not yet amount to an<del type="cancelled">y</del> unlawfull worship, yet it disposed <lb xml:id="l772"/>the Christians towards <del type="strikethrough">such a worship as <del type="cancelled">was</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">proved</add> very unlawful</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">such <choice><sic>a</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> a further veneration <lb xml:id="l773"/><add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="yes">of the dead</add> <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">as</add> <del type="strikethrough">a length</del> in a short time ended in the invocation of saints<supplied reason="blot">.</supplied></p>
<p xml:id="par64">The next step was the affecting to pray at the <del type="strikethrough">shrines</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">sepulchres</add> of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Martyrs &amp; <add place="lineEnd" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> <lb xml:id="l774"/>bringing <supplied reason="omitted" cert="medium">of</supplied> their bodies into the <del type="strikethrough">Churches</del> Oratories or Churches of the Christians.</p>

Then Constantine the great in his war <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><orig>against</orig></choice> <lb xml:id="l776"/>Maxentius had a vision of a Cross appearing in the Clouds <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> this inscription <lb xml:id="l777"/><foreign xml:lang="lat">In hoc signo vinces</foreign>, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> gave occasion to weak Christians to attribute some vertue <lb xml:id="l778"/>to the signe of the cross &amp; <del type="strikethrough">a greater vertue</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">more especially</add> to the wood of the cross it self <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was said <lb xml:id="l779"/>to be found in the reign of Constantine</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> at that time being found in Iudea they distributed over all the Empire</add>. And these supertitions towards the cross &amp; towards <lb xml:id="l780"/>the <del type="strikethrough">dead</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">bodies of martyrs</add> got ground among Christians all the reign of Constantine &amp; his sons</p>
