                        <p>SL245, described in the Sotheby catalogue as <hi rend="italic">c.</hi> 300,000 words on 975 pp., was bought at the Sotheby sale by Gabriel Wells for £48 and sold to Yahuda on 1 Aug. 1936 for the sale price plus 15%. On 24 May 1949, Yahuda wrote to the London dealer Heinrich Eisemann, 'As to lot 245 the new arrangement and replacement of the pages resulted in 1,530 pages instead of 975 pages as many pages had to be taken out from other lots. But for this manuscript I have a customer who wants to pay a much higher price than $3,800 suggested by you.' If this was true, the prospective buyer's desire to part with his or her cash presumably waned. There must subsequently have been further reordering of the manuscript as the present Yahuda Ms. 7 amounts to nowhere near 1,530 pp.</p>

And in his decretal epistle to <lb xml:id="l3"/>Anastasius bishop of Thessalonica, he ordeined that that bishop <lb xml:id="l4"/>should hold two Provincial Councils every year &amp; refer the <lb xml:id="l5"/>harder causes to the sea of Rome: &amp; that if upon any ex<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l6"/>traordinary occasion it should be necessary to call a Council <lb xml:id="l7"/>he should not be troublesome to the bishops under him <lb xml:id="l8"/>but be content with two bishops out of every province <lb xml:id="l9"/>&amp; not detain them above fifteen days. And in the same <lb xml:id="l10"/>epistle he <del type="cancelled">thus</del> describes the form of Church government the<choice><unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">n</unclear><unclear cert="medium">re</unclear></choice> <lb xml:id="l11"/>set up to consist in a subordination of all the Churches to the <lb xml:id="l12"/>sea of Rome. <foreign xml:lang="lat">De qua forma, </foreign> saith he, <foreign xml:lang="lat">episcoporum quo est <lb xml:id="l13"/>orta distinctio &amp; magna dispositione provisum est, ne omnes sibi <lb xml:id="l14"/>omnia vindicarent, sed essent in singulis Provincijs singuli <lb xml:id="l15"/>quorum inter fratres haberetur prima sententia, &amp; rursus <lb xml:id="l16"/>quidam in majoribus urbibus constituti sollicitudinem susci<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l17"/>perent ampliorem per quos ad unam Petri sedem univer<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l18"/>salis Ecclesiæ cura conflueret &amp; <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>ihil usq a suo capite <lb xml:id="l19"/>dissideret. <p xml:id="par2">In these epistles the authority of the Council of Nice <lb xml:id="l28"/>is frequently alledged. <del type="over">But</del><add place="over" indicator="no">And</add> Pope Zosimus A.C. 417, receiving <lb xml:id="l29"/>the appeal of Pelagius &amp; Celestius from the sentence of <lb xml:id="l30"/>an African Council &amp; absolving them, alledged the authority <lb xml:id="l31"/>of the Council of Nice for what he did: <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">But</add> the African <lb xml:id="l32"/>Bishops sent to the Bishops of Alexandria &amp; Antioch for <lb xml:id="l33"/>copies of the Acts of that Council &amp; thereby detected the <lb xml:id="l34"/>fraud &amp; preserved their liberty for a time. But about 28 <lb xml:id="l35"/>years after, <del type="strikethrough">when</del> upon a dispute between the bishops of <lb xml:id="l36"/>Arles &amp; Vien about superiority, when Pope Leo I in a <lb xml:id="l37"/>Council at Rome had passed sentence against the Bishop <lb xml:id="l38"/>of Arles, he took occasion from thence to procure the <lb xml:id="l39"/>following edict from the <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">western</add> Emperor Valentinian for <lb xml:id="l40"/>establishing the authority of his sea more fully over <lb xml:id="l41"/>all the Churches of the western Empire. </p>

Et cum altari ~ <lb xml:id="l134"/>assistitur, semper ad Patrem dirigatur Oratio. For if <lb xml:id="l213"/>the placing supernatural virtue in words &amp; figures &amp; cere<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l214"/>monies &amp; things consecrated &amp; reliques &amp; images &amp; invocations <lb xml:id="l215"/>of dead men, be abominable actions of the same kind with <del type="cancelled">the <lb xml:id="l216"/>heathen</del> charms &amp; magic &amp; sorcery &amp; <del type="cancelled">the in<gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> idolatry, &amp; if Christi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l217"/>an sorcerers &amp; Christian Idolaters be the worst of hereticks: then the <lb xml:id="l218"/>Roman Empire before the end of the fourth century became very <lb xml:id="l219"/>heretical, that is, in the language of Cyprian &amp; the primitive <lb xml:id="l220"/>Christians it became very antichristian. Which change of religion <lb xml:id="l221"/>from heathen to Christian &amp; from Christian to Antichristian being <lb xml:id="l222"/>one of the greatest revolutions <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> ever happened in the Roman <lb xml:id="l223"/>Empire deserved here to be explained. For this is that Apostasy <lb xml:id="l224"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Saint</expan></choice> Paul calls <choice><abbr>y <hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> man of sin &amp; <choice><abbr>y <hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> son of perdition, telling us <lb xml:id="l225"/>that so soon as that <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> hindred <del type="cancelled">should be revealed</del> ( namely the <lb xml:id="l226"/>heathen Roman Empire ) should be taken out of the way, it should be <lb xml:id="l227"/>revealed &amp; appear by a strong delusion with all power &amp; signes &amp; <lb xml:id="l228"/>lying wonders &amp; with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them <lb xml:id="l229"/>that perish, &amp; at length be destroyed by the brightness of Christs <lb xml:id="l230"/>second coming. <del type="cancelled"> ] </del> It began to work in the Apostles days, &amp; was <lb xml:id="l231"/>to continue till the second coming of Christ, &amp; therefore is <lb xml:id="l232"/>now in being. </p>
<p xml:id="par10">The men who chiefly promoted these superstitions were <lb xml:id="l233"/>the Moncks, &amp; the religion of the Moncks was of the same <lb xml:id="l234"/>kind with the superstitions of the Encratites &amp; Cataphrygians <lb xml:id="l235"/>but more absurd. This religion was propagated in Egypt by <lb xml:id="l236"/>Antony &amp; in Syria by Hilarion two Encratites, &amp; spread so fast <lb xml:id="l237"/>that soon after the reign of Iulian the Apostate a third <lb xml:id="l238"/>part of the Egyptians were got into the <del type="strikethrough">wilderness</del> deserts <lb xml:id="l239"/>of Egypt. They lived first singly in cells, then associated <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">into</fw><pb xml:id="p006r" n="6r"/><fw type="shelfmark" place="topRight">6<hi rend="subscript">r</hi></fw> into <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">cæpbia</unclear> and at length came into towns &amp; filled the Chur<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l240"/>ches with bishops præsbyters &amp; deacons. Athanasius in his <lb xml:id="l241"/>younger days poured water upon the hands of his master <lb xml:id="l242"/>Antony. He was first a monck then a Deacon &amp; then a ~ <lb xml:id="l243"/>Bishop &amp; finding the Moncks faithfull to him made many <lb xml:id="l244"/>of them <del type="over">b</del><add place="over" indicator="no">B</add>ishops &amp; Presbyters in Egypt, &amp; these Bishops erected <lb xml:id="l245"/>monasteries in their cities, out of which they chose Presbyters <lb xml:id="l246"/>&amp; sent bishops to other cities. And the like was done in <lb xml:id="l247"/>Syria. Spiridion &amp; Epiphanius of Cyprus, Iames of Nisibis, <lb xml:id="l248"/>Cyril of Ierusalem, Eustathius of Sebastia in Armenia <lb xml:id="l249"/>Eusebius of Emissa, Titus of Bostra, Basilius of Amcyra, <lb xml:id="l250"/>Acacius of Cæsarea in Palæstine, Elpidius of Laodic<unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">æ</unclear>a, <lb xml:id="l251"/>Melitius &amp; Flavian of Antioch, Theodorus of Tyre, <lb xml:id="l252"/>Protogenes of Carrh<choice><unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">æ</unclear><unclear cert="medium">œ</unclear></choice> , Acacius of Berrhœa, Theodotus of <lb xml:id="l253"/>Hierapolis, Eusebius of Chalcedon, <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear marginRight">Amphilochius of Iconium, Gregory Nazianzen, Gregory Nyssen</add> &amp; Iohn Chrysostom of <lb xml:id="l254"/>Constantinople were both bishops &amp; Moncks. Eustathius, <lb xml:id="l255"/>Basil, Gregory Nazianzen &amp; Gregory Nyssen had monaste<lb xml:id="l256"/>ries of clergimen in their cities &amp; were the first who <lb xml:id="l257"/>propagated this sort of monckery in Armenia &amp; Pontus. <lb xml:id="l258"/>Eusebius Vercellensis &amp; Martin carried this sort of <lb xml:id="l259"/>Monckery into the west, &amp; Austin carried it into Afric, <lb xml:id="l260"/>&amp; all these being both bishops &amp; monks erected monas<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l261"/>teries of Clergy-men in their cities out of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> bishops <lb xml:id="l262"/>were sent to other cities who in like manner erected <lb xml:id="l263"/>monasteries in their cities till the Churches were supplied <lb xml:id="l264"/>with bishops out of the monasteries. <anchor xml:id="n006r-01"/><note place="marginRight" target="#n006r-01">Epist 10</note> Whence Ierome <lb xml:id="l265"/>in a letter written about the year 385, saith of the Clergy: <lb xml:id="l266"/><foreign xml:lang="lat">Quasi et ipsi aliud sint quam monachi &amp; non quic<del type="over"><unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">t</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">q</add>uid in <lb xml:id="l267"/>Monachos dicitur redundet in Cleri<del type="over">o</del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>os qui patres sunt <lb xml:id="l268"/>Monachorum.
