<p>A discussion in Newton's somewhat rambling late style about Jewish dietary laws and the extent to which they remain in force for Christians.  Newton comes to no firm conclusion about the matter, but commends kosher slaughter for being comparatively humane.  Avoiding cruelty to animals was, at least in later life, a topic close to Newton's heart, as is attested by many anecdotes about him and by his own writings (e.g. Keynes Mss. 3 and 9).</p>

 <pb xml:id="p001r" n="1r"/><head rend="center" xml:id="hd1">The Question stated about absteining from blood.</head><space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="2"/>
 <p xml:id="par1">The Israelites are recconed to have had two sorts of Proselites, <lb xml:id="l1"/>one to the law of Moses, the other only to the precepts of the sons <lb xml:id="l2"/>of Noah.  The first they circumcised the other not. Yet the Patri<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l3"/>archs were circumcised before the law of Moses though they lived <lb xml:id="l4"/>only under the Precepts of the sons of Noach, circumcision being <lb xml:id="l5"/>instituted upon a covenant <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Abraham &amp; his posterity. And there<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l6"/>fore circumcision made men debtors to the law upon no other account <lb xml:id="l7"/>then as it <del type="strikethrough">made</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">adopted</add> them sons of Abraham <del type="cancelled">who were all of them</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Isaac &amp; Iacob. For all the Israelites were</add> obliged <lb xml:id="l8"/>to the law of Moses.</p>
 <p xml:id="par2">The Gentiles were called not to be<add place="inline" indicator="no">co<del type="over">ad</del><add place="over" indicator="no">me</add></add><del type="strikethrough">opted</del> sons of Abraham <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">by adoption</add> but <lb xml:id="l9"/>to beleive in Iesus Christ &amp; therefore were not obliged to circumcision <lb xml:id="l10"/>&amp; <add indicator="no" place="inline"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> law of Moses, but being sons of Noach they were obliged <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">to be</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l11"/>to the Precepts of the sons of Noach. The Gentiles who observed these <lb xml:id="l12"/>Precepts <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">lived</unclear></del> were allowed to live among the people of Israel <lb xml:id="l13"/>&amp; are called <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Proselites of justice &amp;</add> Proselites of the Gate, <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; strangers sojourning in Israel</add> &amp; (in the fourth <choice><sic>Commadment</sic><corr>Commandment</corr></choice>) <lb xml:id="l14"/>strangers within the<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">ir</unclear></del> Gates of Israel. And <del type="strikethrough">such Proselytes were the <choice><orig>Xtians</orig><reg>Christians</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l15"/>to be</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">it was sufficient for <choice><orig>X<hi rend="superscript">tians</hi></orig><reg>Christians</reg></choice> to become</add> such Proselytes.</p>
 <p xml:id="par3">The Apostles therefore being consulted about <del type="strikethrough">obliging the <lb xml:id="l16"/>circumcising the Gentiles &amp;</del> obliging the<del type="strikethrough">m</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Gentiles by circumcision</add> to become the sons of <lb xml:id="l17"/>Abraham &amp; keep the law <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">of Moses</add> returned such an answer as imported <lb xml:id="l18"/>that it was sufficient for them to observe the laws imposed upon <lb xml:id="l19"/>the sons of Noah before the days of Abraham.</p>
 <p xml:id="par4">Some of those laws were moral &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">sufficiently</add> enforced by the Christian reli<lb type="intentional" xml:id="l20"/>gion; as to abstein from idolatry blasphemy &amp; theft: others were <lb xml:id="l21"/>positive; as to abstein from things offered to idols, from blood &amp; things <lb xml:id="l22"/>strangled <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; from fornication</add>; that is, from communicating with the heathen in their <lb xml:id="l23"/>festivals upon things offered to idols <del type="cancelled">of</del> because it tends to idolatry, <lb xml:id="l24"/>from blood &amp; things stranguled because <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> it leads to cruelty, &amp; <lb xml:id="l25"/>from prohibited weomen because of the ill consequences, whether they <lb xml:id="l26"/><del type="cancelled">be</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">were</add> prohibited <del type="strikethrough">without</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">untill</add> <del type="cancelled">no</del> marriage <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">only</add> or by reason of affinity, or of <lb xml:id="l27"/><del type="strikethrough">because they are idolaters</del> their being idolators or <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">during</add> their menses.</p>
 <p xml:id="par5">Noah was allowed to feed upon <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><del type="cancelled">clean</del></add> animals provided they were <lb xml:id="l28"/>killed by bleeding to death.  But he was not allowed to feed upon <lb xml:id="l29"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">blood</add> least he should thirst after the<del type="cancelled">ir</del> blood of animals &amp; for the sake <lb xml:id="l30"/>of it become cruel &amp; kill more animals then were necessary for food, <lb xml:id="l31"/><add indicator="no" place="supralinear">or cut them in pieces before they were quite dead by bleeding.</add> He was not to eat things stranguled because that sort of death <lb xml:id="l32"/>is painfull.  He was not to eat a limb taken off from a living <lb xml:id="l33"/>animal because of the cruelty.  And so Moses commanded that the <lb xml:id="l34"/>people of Israel should not seeth a Kid in the mothers milk, nor take a <lb xml:id="l35"/>bird <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> its young nor muzzel the mouth of an Ox <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> treadeth out the corn, <lb xml:id="l36"/>because such actions incline men to cruelty &amp; savour of unmercifulness.</p>
 <p xml:id="par6"><del type="blockStrikethrough">When Moses command<del type="over">s</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ed</add> to abstein from <del type="cancelled">bloo</del> eating blood, &amp; inforced <lb xml:id="l37"/>his law with this reason: <hi rend="underline">for the blood is the life <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">or soul</add> of the animal</hi>: <del type="strikethrough">doth</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">did</add> he not <lb xml:id="l38"/>refer to an ancienter Law in use among the nations from the days of <lb xml:id="l39"/>Noah, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> viz<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>, <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">The</unclear></del> <hi rend="underline">Flesh <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> life thereof thou shalt not eat</hi> Gen 9.4, &amp; inter<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l40"/>pret that Law by saying that <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">by</unclear></del> the life, <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="lat">anima</foreign>, is <del type="strikethrough">to be understood</del> the <lb xml:id="l41"/>blood; <del type="cancelled">for the life</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">or</add> is in the blood: <del type="strikethrough">&amp; therefore with the blood you shall only <lb xml:id="l42"/>make an attone<choice><orig>m<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></orig><reg>ment</reg></choice> for your own lives or souls?</del> For is not this to tell us that by the <lb xml:id="l43"/>life in that ancient law is to be understood the blood?  With the blood of the sacrifi<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l44"/>ces you shall make an attonement for your lives or souls, but you shall not eat it <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">because</fw></del><pb xml:id="p001v" n="1v"/> <del type="blockStrikethrough"><supplied reason="omitted">because</supplied> in that ancient law of the sons of Noah, the life forbidden to be eaten <lb xml:id="l45"/>with the flesh, is the blood or is in the blood.</del></p>
 <p xml:id="par7"><del type="blockStrikethrough">When Moses commanded to abstein from eating blood &amp; <lb xml:id="l46"/>enforced his law with this reason: <hi rend="underline">For the blood is the life of the <lb xml:id="l47"/>flesh</hi>, did he not refer to an ancienter Law in use among the nations <lb xml:id="l48"/>from the days <del type="strikethrough">of the sons</del> of Noah, viz<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> <hi rend="underline">flesh with the life thereof <lb xml:id="l49"/>thou shall not eat</hi>, Gen. IX.4. &amp; did he not interpret this Law by <lb xml:id="l50"/>saying that <hi rend="underline">the life</hi> [<foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="lat">anima</foreign>] <hi rend="underline">is the blood</hi> or <hi rend="underline">is in the blood</hi>?</del> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> In the <lb xml:id="l51"/>wilderness the children of Israel<del type="cancelled">ites</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; the strangers which sojourned among them</add> were to kill all their sheep &amp; Oxen <lb xml:id="l52"/><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">&amp; Goats</add> at the door of the Tabernacle, &amp; pour out their blood <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> because it <lb xml:id="l53"/>is the life of the flesh &amp; <del type="strikethrough">the life of the flesh</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">the flesh</add> [<del type="cancelled">in the</del> according to the <lb xml:id="l54"/>Law <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">of Nations</add> given to Noah.] <del type="strikethrough">is not to be eat the flesh</del> was not to be eaten with <lb xml:id="l55"/>the life thereof <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Levit. XVII.3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 14.</add>.  <hi rend="underline">But when the Lord thy God</hi>, saith Moses, <hi rend="underline">shall en<lb xml:id="l56"/>large thy border, &amp; thou shalt say I will eat flesh: if the place <lb xml:id="l57"/>which the Lord thy God</hi> <del type="strikethrough">shall ch</del> <hi rend="underline">hath chosen to put his name there <lb xml:id="l58"/>be too far from thee thou shalt kill of thy herd &amp; <choice><sic>off</sic><corr>of</corr></choice> thy flock &amp; <lb xml:id="l59"/>thou shalt eat in thy gates whatsoever thy soul lusteth after <lb xml:id="l60"/>– only be sure that thou eat not the blood. For the blood is the <lb xml:id="l61"/>life</hi> [mentioned in the law <del type="strikethrough">given to</del> of nations given to Noah,] <hi rend="underline">&amp;</hi> <lb xml:id="l62"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> [by that Law] <hi rend="underline">thou mayst not eat the life with the flesh. Thou <lb xml:id="l63"/>shalt not eat it, Thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water</hi>. <lb xml:id="l64"/>Deut. XII.15, 20, 21, 23, 24. This Law Moses imposed not only upon <lb xml:id="l65"/>the people of Israel but also upon the stranger who sojourned <lb xml:id="l66"/><del type="strikethrough">within <del type="cancelled">th</del></del> among them, &amp; therefore looked upon it as the law <lb xml:id="l67"/>of <del type="strikethrough">God imposed upon Noah &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">all</add> his posterity</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">nations</add>; not as <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">one of</add> the new Laws <lb xml:id="l68"/><del type="strikethrough">instituted by himself</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">given to Israel in Mount Sina</add>, but as an old law <del type="strikethrough">[<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> needed only to <lb xml:id="l69"/>be explained &amp; enforced the Law]</del> given to the sons of Noah presently <lb xml:id="l70"/>after the flood <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">an old law <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> needed only to be explained &amp; enforced.</add> When therefore Moses saith, <hi rend="underline">be sure that thou eat not <lb xml:id="l71"/>the blood; for the blood is the life &amp; thou mayst not eat the life with the <lb xml:id="l72"/>blood</hi>: doth not Moses in saying <hi rend="underline">thou mayst not eat the life with the blood</hi> <lb xml:id="l73"/>recite that ancient law &amp; thereby enforce his prohibiting the eating of blood? <lb xml:id="l74"/><del type="strikethrough">&amp; doth he not</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">And</add> in saying <hi rend="underline">be sure that thou eat not the blood, for the blood is the</hi> <lb xml:id="l75"/>life <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">doth he not</add> explain what is meant by <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">the</unclear></del> <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> <foreign xml:lang="lat">anima</foreign>, the soul or life in that ancient <lb xml:id="l76"/>law?  And when <del type="cancelled">he</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">in</add> relating the history of the flood, he recites that <del type="cancelled">law</del> ancient <lb xml:id="l77"/>law <del type="cancelled">doth But</del> <hi rend="underline">Flesh <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the life thereof ye shall not eat</hi>, doth he not insert <lb xml:id="l78"/>the blood by way of explication, <hi rend="underline">Flesh <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the life thereof</hi> [<choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <hi rend="underline">the blood</hi><del type="cancelled">]</del> <lb xml:id="l79"/>thereof] <del type="cancelled">ye</del> <hi rend="underline">shall ye not eat</hi>? The language used by Noah might be so <lb xml:id="l80"/>far antiquated in the days of Moses as <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">in reciting that ancient law</add> to need an explication.</p>
 <p xml:id="par8"><add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Cain was a tiller of the ground &amp; offered the fruit of the ground to the Lord &amp;</add> Abel was a keeper of sheep &amp; offered of his flock. <del type="strikethrough">to the Lord Flesh</del> Sheep <lb xml:id="l81"/>were therefore <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">kept &amp;</add> sacrificed &amp; eaten <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> before the flood, &amp; <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><choice><sic>&amp;</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> upon <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">Noahs</unclear> sacrificing</add> God renewed the license <lb xml:id="l82"/>of eating <gap reason="blot" unit="chars" extent="1"/> it provided they eat it without <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> the blood: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> makes it pro<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l83"/>bable that <del type="cancelled">God <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> blood was prohibited before the flood. Moses prohibited it <lb xml:id="l84"/>&amp; so did the Apostles to all nations not because blood defileth him that <lb xml:id="l85"/>eateth it but because the prohibition tendeth to <del type="strikethrough">mercit</del> mercy. <del type="cancelled">Qua</del></p>

 <pb xml:id="p002r" n="2r"/><p xml:id="par10">In six or eight hundred years, lang<add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">u</add>ages alter very much, &amp; the language <lb xml:id="l86"/>in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> this law <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/> Thou</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">was given to Noah</add> <hi rend="underline">Flesh <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the</hi> <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> <hi rend="underline">thereof thou shalt not eat,</hi> <lb xml:id="l87"/>was given to <del type="strikethrough">the days of</del> Noah might be so altered before the days of Moses <lb xml:id="l88"/>that the word <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> Nepesh might need an explication. <del type="strikethrough">When therefore Moses</del> <lb xml:id="l89"/>When therefore Moses commands both the children of Israel &amp; the strangers <lb xml:id="l90"/>who sojourned amongst them that they should not eat the blood of animals <lb xml:id="l91"/>with the flesh, &amp; enforces his command with this reason For the blood is the <lb xml:id="l92"/><foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> of the flesh &amp; the flesh <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> thereof thou shalt not eat (Levit <lb xml:id="l93"/>XVII &amp; Deut XII) doth he not recite the ancient law of Noah: <hi rend="underline">Flesh with the</hi> <lb xml:id="l94"/><del type="cancelled">life</del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear"><foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign></add> <hi rend="underline">thereof shall ye not eat</hi>, &amp; doth he not interpret the word Nepes <lb xml:id="l95"/>by saying that <hi rend="underline">the blood is the</hi> <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> <hi rend="underline">of the flesh</hi>? And when in <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="6"/></del> <lb xml:id="l96"/>relating the history of the flood he sets down that ancient law <hi rend="underline">Flesh with <lb xml:id="l97"/>the</hi> <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign> <hi rend="underline">thereof</hi>, <del type="cancelled">viz<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> the</del> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> is <hi rend="underline">the blood thereof, shall ye not eat,</hi> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">Gen IX.4</add> doth <lb xml:id="l98"/>he not insert the words <del type="cancelled"><hi rend="underline">blood</hi></del> <hi rend="underline">blood thereof</hi> into the law for interpreting <lb xml:id="l99"/>what is to be here understood by the word <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign>? <del type="strikethrough">For <foreign xml:lang="heb">נפש</foreign></del> <add indicator="yes" place="supralinear">This word</add> here must <lb xml:id="l100"/>signify a corporeal substance <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> can be eaten &amp; therefore not the life <lb xml:id="l101"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></add> blood in <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the life is seated or the blood of the life<del type="cancelled">.</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear"><del type="strikethrough">or soul</del></add> <del type="cancelled">For</del> as it is called in the <lb xml:id="l102"/>next words Gen IX. 5.</p>

And when Moses</p>
 <p xml:id="par12"><del type="strikethrough">This was</del> These things were done for food <add indicator="yes" place="interlinear">&amp; the distinction between beasts clean &amp; unclean before the flood shewed what beasts were <lb xml:id="l106"/>then lawful to be sacrificed &amp; eaten &amp; what not:</add> &amp; after the flood when <lb xml:id="l107"/>God said to Noah <hi rend="underline">Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you <lb xml:id="l108"/>even as the green herb have I given you all things</hi> he repeted &amp; re<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l109"/>established an old Law. And when he added: <hi rend="underline">but flesh <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the blood thereof shall <lb xml:id="l110"/>ye not eat</hi>: it may be takenfor a part of that <del type="strikethrough">Law</del> old Law. <del type="strikethrough">Moses re<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l111"/>peated</del> This <del type="strikethrough">prohibition of</del> <add indicator="no" place="supralinear">Law against</add> eating blood was repeated by Moses to all nations <lb xml:id="l112"/>&amp; again by the Apostles; not because blood defileth him that eateth <lb xml:id="l113"/>it, but because the prohibition is a check to salvageness &amp; cruelty.</p>
