<p xml:id="par2">They followed vanity &amp; became vain &amp; went after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heathen <lb xml:id="l5"/>that were round about them concerning whom <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>L<hi rend="superscript">d</hi></abbr><expan>Lord</expan></choice> had said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l6"/>they should not do like them. And they left all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> commandements of <lb xml:id="l7"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord their God &amp; made them molten images even two calves <lb xml:id="l8"/>&amp; made a grove &amp; worshipped all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> host of heaven &amp; <lb xml:id="l9"/>served Baal.</p>
<p xml:id="par3">Having had formerly occasion to disourse of these words <lb xml:id="l10"/>I told you how <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> designe of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> place was to describe <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> capti<lb xml:id="l11"/>vity of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">Israelites</del> ten tribes by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Assyrians &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> abominations <lb xml:id="l12"/>for which they were captivated &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> religion of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations <lb xml:id="l13"/><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> assyrians placed in Samaria in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> seats of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> capti<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l14"/>vated Israelites: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> religion was that these nations joyned <lb xml:id="l15"/>together <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Calves of Ierebo<choice><orig>ā</orig><reg>am</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l16"/>&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fals Gods of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles round about <lb xml:id="l17"/>in their several Idols even as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites had joyned <lb xml:id="l18"/>them before. ffor <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> better understanding <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> tenour &amp; force <lb xml:id="l19"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> place I laid down these six particulars. 1<hi rend="superscript">st</hi> That <lb xml:id="l20"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites acknowledged &amp; worshipped <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l21"/>same time that they worshipped <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">Gods of the</add> Gentiles. 2 That they <lb xml:id="l22"/>&amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> succeeded them in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Cities of Lana<lb xml:id="l23"/>ria worshipped <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> calves of Ierobo<choice><orig>ā</orig><reg>am</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l24"/>3 That this worship was Idolatry notwithstanding that <lb xml:id="l25"/>it was performed to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God: &amp; by parity of reason <lb xml:id="l26"/>that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God by any Image <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l27"/>he has not commanded, (as indeed he has commanded none) <lb xml:id="l28"/>is Idolatry. 4 That generally <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites &amp; Gentiles <lb xml:id="l29"/>worshipped not mere Images as Gods themselves but only <lb xml:id="l30"/>as dedicated to their several Gods. 5 That the ancient <lb xml:id="l31"/>Idolaters, as many of them as acknowledged <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God, <lb xml:id="l32"/>did not esteem any of their other Gods equal to him <lb xml:id="l33"/>but accounted them only finite beings &amp; for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> most part <lb xml:id="l34"/>the souls of men deceased, who for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> eminent passage of <lb xml:id="l35"/>their life here they supposed were after death rewarded <lb xml:id="l36"/>with power more or less over this world, to do good or <lb xml:id="l37"/>hurt therein <del type="strikethrough">not only</del> subordinately not only to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> supreme <lb xml:id="l38"/>God but even to some others of their imagined Gods. Lastly <pb xml:id="p003r" n="3r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">3</fw>that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> glory of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Idolaters gave unto their <lb xml:id="l39"/>Idols, was not any of his attributes as some are ready to <lb xml:id="l40"/>suppose, but only this: To love, to fear, to trust in, &amp; to <lb xml:id="l41"/><choice><sic>to</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> seek unto those Gods for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> temporal blessings of this <lb xml:id="l42"/>life, for <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God has appointed us to love fear <lb xml:id="l43"/>trust in &amp; seek unto none but himself immediately. <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="medium" reason="del">To</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l44"/>And consequently to do any of these things in a religious <lb xml:id="l45"/>way to any other then the true god, is so far to depart <lb xml:id="l46"/>from him &amp; give his glory to another: the great crime <lb xml:id="l47"/>of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> Idolaters stand accused.</p>
<p xml:id="par4">ffor evincing the first of these particulars <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">*</add><addSpan spanTo="#addend002v-01" place="p002v" startDescription="f 2v" endDescription="f 3r" resp="#mjh"/> * that the Israelites acknowledged &amp; worshipped the true God at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l48"/>same time that they worshipped <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gods of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles.<anchor xml:id="addend002v-01"/> I produced <lb xml:id="l49"/>several places of scripture <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> I shall not repeat: only <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l50"/>last of them I named, I shall remind you of that I may <lb xml:id="l51"/>explain it a little further. It was in Ier 44.25, 26 <lb xml:id="l52"/>where a hand of Iews <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> time of Nebuchadnez<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l53"/>zars captivity fled into Ægypt, vowed in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="medium" reason="del">lo</unclear></del> name of <lb xml:id="l54"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord to worship <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven. The words <lb xml:id="l55"/>run thus. Hear <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word of the lord all Iudah that are <lb xml:id="l56"/>in the Land of Egypt: Thus saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord of hosts <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l57"/>God of Israel, saying Ye &amp; <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> wives have both spoken <lb xml:id="l58"/>with your mouth &amp; fulfilled <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> your hands, saying, We <lb xml:id="l59"/>will surely perform <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> vows that we have vowed to <lb xml:id="l60"/>burn incense to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven &amp; to pour out <lb xml:id="l61"/>drink offrings unto her: Ye will surely accomplish your <lb xml:id="l62"/>vows &amp; surely perform your vows. Therefore hear ye <lb xml:id="l63"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord all Iudah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> dwell in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Land <lb xml:id="l64"/>of Egypt, Behold I have sworn by my great name <lb xml:id="l65"/>saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord that my name shall be no more named <lb xml:id="l66"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mouth of any man of Iudah in all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Land of <lb xml:id="l67"/>Egypt saying; The Lord God liveth. In the 42<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Chapter <lb xml:id="l68"/>the remnant of the people which scaped the <del type="cancelled">the</del> hands of <lb xml:id="l69"/>the king of Babylon, &amp; remained in the land after the <lb xml:id="l70"/>captivity &amp; burning of Ierusalem, came to Ieremiah &amp; said <lb xml:id="l71"/>to him: Let, we beseech thee our supplication be accepted bef<supplied reason="copy" cert="medium">ore</supplied> <lb xml:id="l72"/>the &amp; pray for us unto the Lord thy God, even for all this <lb xml:id="l73"/>remnant, that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord thy God may shew us <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> way wherein <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">we</fw><pb xml:id="p004r" n="4r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">4</fw> we may walk &amp; the thing that we may do. After a <lb xml:id="l74"/>few days Ieremiah returned them answer from <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l75"/>Lord that if they went into Egypt, as they designed, <lb xml:id="l76"/>they should surely be cut off there by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> armies <lb xml:id="l77"/>of the king of Babylon, but if they stayd in their <lb xml:id="l78"/>own land it should be well with them. But this <lb xml:id="l79"/>answer being contrary to their inclination, they replied to <lb xml:id="l80"/>Ieremiah, Thou speakest falsly, The Lord our God <lb xml:id="l81"/>hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn <lb xml:id="l82"/>there. Here you see the people acknowledged <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true <lb xml:id="l83"/>God, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> God of Ieremiah <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">whom they called their own God</add>, &amp; made their applicati<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l84"/>ons to him to know whether they should go into <lb xml:id="l85"/>Egypt or stay in their Land. And when they received <lb xml:id="l86"/>answer that they should stay they did not <del type="strikethrough"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">present</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">thereupon</add> <lb xml:id="l87"/>reject their God, &amp; say we will <del type="strikethrough">will</del> not obey him <lb xml:id="l88"/>but only blamed the Prophet as if he had <del type="strikethrough">lied</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">feigned</add> un<lb xml:id="l89"/>to them, &amp; not spoken to them from the Lord. Vpon <lb xml:id="l90"/>this therefore they went into Egypt, &amp; what they did <lb xml:id="l91"/>there you have described in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 44<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> Chapter, <del type="strikethrough">vers 7</del> <lb xml:id="l92"/>the 7<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> &amp; following verses, where Ieremiah is sent to <lb xml:id="l93"/>reprove them for their Idolatry, with this message. Thus <lb xml:id="l94"/>saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord, the God of hosts, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> God of Israel, Where<lb xml:id="l95"/>fore commit ye this great evil against your souls to cut <lb xml:id="l96"/>off from you man &amp; woman child &amp; suckling out of <lb xml:id="l97"/>Iudah to leave you none to remain: In that ye pro<lb xml:id="l98"/>voke me to wrath <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> works of <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> hands burn<lb xml:id="l99"/>ing incence<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del> unto other Gods in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> land of Egypt, <lb xml:id="l100"/>whether ye be gone to dwell. – Have ye forgotten the <lb xml:id="l101"/>wickedness of your fathers &amp; <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wickedness of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> kings <lb xml:id="l102"/>of Iudah &amp; the wickedness of their wives, &amp; your <lb xml:id="l103"/>own wickedness &amp; the wickedness of your wives which they <lb xml:id="l104"/>have committed in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> land of Iudah &amp; in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> streets of <lb xml:id="l105"/>Ierusalem? They are not humbled even unto this day <lb xml:id="l106"/>Neither have they feared nor walked in my law nor <lb xml:id="l107"/>in my statutes that I set before you &amp; before <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> fathers. <lb xml:id="l108"/>Therefore thus<choice><sic>;</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> saith the lord of hosts <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> God of <unclear cert="high" reason="copy">Israel</unclear>  <pb xml:id="p005r" n="5r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">5</fw>Behold I will set my face against you for evil, even to <lb xml:id="l109"/>cut of all Iudah. These men you see <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> then were <lb xml:id="l110"/>Idolaters in their own land before the<del type="cancelled">ir</del> captivity <lb xml:id="l111"/>&amp; in Egypt after it. In the midst of their abomina<lb xml:id="l112"/>tions it was that they  came to Ieremiah to enquire of <lb xml:id="l113"/>the Lord, &amp; now when Ieremiah was sent to em to <del type="cancelled">tell</del> <lb xml:id="l114"/><del type="strikethrough">'em of</del> denounce Gods judgments on 'em for their doings <lb xml:id="l115"/>&amp; exhort them to repentance &amp; they replied that <lb xml:id="l116"/>they would <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">not</unclear> still</del> not hearken to him but keep to that <lb xml:id="l117"/>worship <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they &amp; their fathers had used before in <lb xml:id="l118"/>Ierusalem, the Prophet <del type="strikethrough">replies</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">answers</add>: Thus saith the Lord <lb xml:id="l119"/>God of Israel, saying ye &amp; your wives have both spoken <lb xml:id="l120"/>with your mouth &amp; fulfilled with your hands <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <lb xml:id="l121"/>saying: We will surely perform <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> vows that we have <lb xml:id="l122"/>vowed to burn incen<del type="over">c</del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add>e to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven &amp; to <lb xml:id="l123"/>pour <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice></del> out drink offerings unto her. Ye will surely <lb xml:id="l124"/>accomplish your vows &amp; surely perform <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> vows <lb xml:id="l125"/>Therefore he<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">are</add> ye <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord all ye that <lb xml:id="l126"/>dwell in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Land of Egypt: Behold I have sworn by <lb xml:id="l127"/>my great name saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord that my name shall <lb xml:id="l128"/>be no more named in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mouth of any man of Iudah <lb xml:id="l129"/>in all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> land of Egypt saying the Lord God liveth <lb xml:id="l130"/>Hitherto then notwithstanding their Idolatry, the name of <lb xml:id="l131"/>the Lord continued among them, &amp; because they vowed by <lb xml:id="l132"/>it to worship the Queen of heaven &amp; upon Ieremiahs <lb xml:id="l133"/>reproving them replied that they would perform their vows <lb xml:id="l134"/>therefore God threatens that his name should be no more <lb xml:id="l135"/>named among them to say, the Lord God liveth. You <lb xml:id="l136"/>are to know <add place="inline" indicator="no"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice></add> this saying <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord God liveth was their <lb xml:id="l137"/><del type="strikethrough">usual</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">solemn</del></add> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">usual</add> way of invoking <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">him</unclear></del> God when they would <del type="cancelled">swear</del> solemn<lb xml:id="l138"/>ly sweare by him. An evident instance of this you <lb xml:id="l139"/>have in Ier. 38.16, where Zedekiah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> king <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of Iudah</add> demanding <lb xml:id="l140"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord of Ieremiah, &amp; Ieremiah fearing <lb xml:id="l141"/>least the King should put him to death for telling it him <lb xml:id="l142"/>it is said that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> king sware secretly to Ieremiah saying <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">As</fw><pb xml:id="p006r" n="6r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">6</fw>As the Lord liveth that made this soule, I will not <lb xml:id="l143"/>put thee to death. So; (as I told you formerly,) the Israelites <lb xml:id="l144"/>when they went to worship <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Calves at Bethel &amp; Gilgal <lb xml:id="l145"/>used to swear after this manner, &amp; therefore in Hosea 4.<lb xml:id="l146"/>15 God commands <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Iudah do not imitate Israel in this <lb xml:id="l147"/>point: Though Israel, saith he, play <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> harlot, yet let <lb xml:id="l148"/>not Iudah offend, &amp; come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go <lb xml:id="l149"/>ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The Lord liveth. This <lb xml:id="l150"/>then was their solemn way of swearing, &amp; as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> ten Tribes <lb xml:id="l151"/>used it in their religion toward <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> calves so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="strikethrough">two</del> <lb xml:id="l152"/>Iews in Egypt used it in their religion towards their Idols <lb xml:id="l153"/>ffor had not their vows to worship <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven <lb xml:id="l154"/>been done in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> name of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord it would have been <lb xml:id="l155"/>incoherent to say, <del type="over">b</del><add place="over" indicator="no">B</add>ecause ye have vowed to worship <lb xml:id="l156"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><sic>Qeen</sic><corr>Queen</corr></choice> of heaven &amp; say ye will perform <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> vows <lb xml:id="l157"/>therefore my name shall be no more named among <lb xml:id="l158"/>you, saying, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord liveth. Tis certain therefore that <lb xml:id="l159"/>these vows were done in Gods name &amp; consequently <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l160"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> midst of their Idolatry they retained a religion <lb xml:id="l161"/>to<add place="inline" indicator="no">ward</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God &amp; thought the<del type="cancelled">ir</del> worshipping other Gods <lb xml:id="l162"/>well pleasing to him: yea that they retained a more <lb xml:id="l163"/>especial regard to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God then to any other &amp; <lb xml:id="l164"/>performed their worship to others, with reverence to him. <lb xml:id="l165"/>ffor why els did they not in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worshipping <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen <lb xml:id="l166"/>of heaven vow by her name rather then by the <lb xml:id="l167"/>name of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord? Why did they plead their vow in <lb xml:id="l168"/>such a manner as if they should be wanting in their <lb xml:id="l169"/><del type="strikethrough">religion to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></del> duty to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God if they did not acord<lb xml:id="l170"/>ing to their vow worship the Queen of heaven? But <lb xml:id="l171"/>how ever it be, this I have plainly shewed that the<del type="cancelled">y</del>se <lb xml:id="l172"/>Idolaters both before they went into Egypt &amp; when they <lb xml:id="l173"/>were there retained <del type="strikethrough">some</del> a religion towards <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true <lb xml:id="l174"/>God, &amp; if you further consider <del type="strikethrough">that they continued it <lb xml:id="l175"/>till they were destroyed for their Idolatry</del> the way by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <fw type="catch" place="bottomRight">God</fw> <pb xml:id="p007r" n="7r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">7</fw>God threatened to put an end to their vowing by his <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <lb xml:id="l176"/>name you may perceive they continued it till, for <lb xml:id="l177"/>their Idolatry, they were destroyed. <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="words" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">Because</add>, says God, ye <lb xml:id="l178"/>have vowed to worship <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Queen of heaven &amp; say ye <lb xml:id="l179"/>will perform your vows therefore my name shall <lb xml:id="l180"/>be no more named in <del type="strikethrough">all</del> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> mouth of any man of <lb xml:id="l181"/>Iudah in all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> land of Egypt saying <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord God <lb xml:id="l182"/>liveth: – for all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> men of Iudah <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> are in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l183"/>land of Egypt shall be <del type="strikethrough">cut off</del> consumed by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> sword <lb xml:id="l184"/>&amp; by the famin untill there be an end of them. <lb xml:id="l185"/>This was the means by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> God foretold them he would <lb xml:id="l186"/>put an end to their swearing by his name &amp; conse<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l187"/>quently they retained a religion to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God &amp; fals <lb xml:id="l188"/>Gods together all <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> while they lived in Egypt.</p>
<p xml:id="par5">Having thus at large given you <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> import of this <lb xml:id="l189"/>place I shall now pass on to another. In Ezek 14. <lb xml:id="l190"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> former part of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Chapter you have the <lb xml:id="l191"/>Elders of Israel in the midst of their Idolatries <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">committed</add> <lb xml:id="l192"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">before the captivity</add> comeing to enquire of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God &amp; God rejects them <lb xml:id="l193"/>because of their Idols. The place runs thus. Then <lb xml:id="l194"/>came certain of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Elders of Israel unto me &amp; sat <lb xml:id="l195"/>before me. And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> word of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord came unto me saying <lb xml:id="l196"/>Son of man these men have set up their Idols in <lb xml:id="l197"/>their heart, &amp; put the stumbling block of their iniqui<lb xml:id="l198"/>ty before their face: should I be enquired of at <lb xml:id="l199"/>all by them? Therefore speak unto them &amp; say unto y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi> <lb xml:id="l200"/>Thus saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord God, Every man of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> house of <lb xml:id="l201"/>Israel that setteth up his Idols in his heart &amp; <lb xml:id="l202"/>putteth <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stumbling block of his iniquity before his <lb xml:id="l203"/>face &amp; cometh to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Prophet, I the Lord will answer <lb xml:id="l204"/>him that cometh according to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> multitude of his Idols. <lb xml:id="l205"/>That I may take the house of Israel in their own <lb xml:id="l206"/>heart because they are all estranged from me throug<supplied reason="copy">h</supplied> <pb xml:id="p008r" n="8r"/><fw type="pag" place="topRight">8r</fw>their Idols. This place seems so evident as to need no <lb xml:id="l207"/>explaining. But yet because there may be some scruple <lb xml:id="l208"/>about their setting up Idols in their heart as if that <lb xml:id="l209"/>expression might imply that they were not Idolaters in their <lb xml:id="l210"/>external acts of worship but onely in their heart, I shall <lb xml:id="l211"/>hereafter say something to cleare <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> expression &amp; then <lb xml:id="l212"/>add an observation or two upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> place together with <lb xml:id="l213"/>some other passages of scripture to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same purpose: by which <lb xml:id="l214"/>I hope to make it appeare <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews &amp; Israelites scarce <lb xml:id="l215"/>ever so followed other Gods as to forsake their own unlesse <lb xml:id="l216"/>perhaps in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">short</del> reign of Ahab when Iezebel a for<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l217"/>reign woman endeavoured to extirpate <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> religion of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l218"/>Israelites &amp; bring in that of her own Country.</p> </div>
