They followed vanity And became vaine &amp; went <lb xml:id="l1"/>after the Heathen that were round about them concerning whom <lb xml:id="l2"/>the <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">This</unclear></del> Lord had said that they should not do like them. –– <lb xml:id="l3"/> Baâl.</p>
<p xml:id="par2">This whole Chapter is spent in describing how the 10 tribes <lb xml:id="l4"/>for their abominations were carried into captivity by <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Assyrians <lb xml:id="l5"/>&amp; how <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> the Assyrians placed in Samaria <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">to</unclear></del> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> roome <lb xml:id="l6"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled">Iewes</del> captivated Israelites, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="words"/></del>  continued <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> abominations <lb xml:id="l7"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was to joyne <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in the calves</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l8"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Heathen Gods round about. And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> words <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l9"/>I have chosen to discourse upon are a <del type="strikethrough">description</del> part of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><unclear reason="hand" cert="low">second</unclear> that is a part of the</add> description of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Idolatry of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites for <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> they were <lb xml:id="l11"/>captivated.</p>
<p xml:id="par3">– but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> words I have chosen to discourse of are a part <lb xml:id="l12"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> description of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> abominations of the<del type="cancelled">se</del> Israelites <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l13"/>these nations imitated. Now th<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>s<del type="cancelled">e</del> comprehending both <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wor<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l14"/>ship of Ieraboam's calves <del type="strikethrough"><choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> was a kind of Idolatry almost <lb xml:id="l15"/>peculiar to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iews</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">dedicated as I shal show to the true God</add>, &amp; also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> worship of <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="medium" reason="del"><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice></unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">other</add> Idols <del type="strikethrough">of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nati<lb xml:id="l16"/>ons round about</del> dedicated to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gods of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nations round <lb xml:id="l17"/>about we have here an opportunity to <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="3" unit="chars"/></del> consider Idolatry in its <lb xml:id="l18"/>full latitude &amp; to discourse of it's nature in general: &amp; for <lb xml:id="l19"/>this end I shal propound these three queres ⓧ <del type="over">1</del><add place="over" indicator="no">2</add> Whether <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l20"/>Israelites worshipped <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="medium" reason="del">true God</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">true God in the</add> Calves as dedicated to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true <lb xml:id="l21"/>God <space dim="horizontal" extent="4" unit="chars"/> <del type="over">2</del><add place="over" indicator="no">3</add><hi rend="superscript">dly</hi> whether the<del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="chars"/></del>y worshipped other Gods as equal to this <lb xml:id="l22"/>God or as his ministers, <del type="over">3</del><add place="over" indicator="no">1</add> whether <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites worshipped <lb xml:id="l23"/>the Images as Gods themselves or as dedicated to other Gods. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <lb xml:id="l24"/><del type="strikethrough">whether the</del> And having determined these Quere's I shall <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="high">shew</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l25"/>then proceed to shew you <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">plainly</add> wherein <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> nature of Idolatry consists <lb xml:id="l26"/>&amp; how its definition is couched in these words, as also in many <lb xml:id="l27"/>other places of scripture notwithstanding / And for this end I <lb xml:id="l28"/>shal first shew you what kind of <del type="strikethrough">Idolatry this was</del> wo<add place="supralinear" indicator="no">r</add>ship that <lb xml:id="l29"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> calves was, &amp; secondly what kind of worship that was <lb xml:id="l30"/>of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gods of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gentiles. And after this I,</p>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4"> thirdly because it is <app type="authorial"><rdg place="inline">accounted</rdg> <rdg place="supralinear"><choice><sic>recconnened</sic><corr>recconed</corr></choice></rdg></app> <del type="strikethrough">as a crime</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">among the crimes</add> of these nations that <lb xml:id="l31"/>they made <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> lowest of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> people priests to this God: for had <lb xml:id="l32"/>this sleight been done to any but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> prophet <lb xml:id="l33"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">here</add> would <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">not</unclear></del> have <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> reprehended them for it. <lb xml:id="l34"/></p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">By this history it is easy to collect that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Land <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l35"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">new</add> nations were tought to <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>worship</expan></choice> in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> cities of samaria was <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true <lb xml:id="l36"/>God &amp; that this same Lord, was worshipped by <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> the Kingdom of Isra<lb xml:id="l37"/>el <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">even amidst the worst of their Idolatries</add> as the God of their Land till <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> very captivity. But this though <lb xml:id="l38"/>it be plain enough of it self yet I <del type="cancelled">will</del> intend the next time to <lb xml:id="l39"/>point at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> particular marks by <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> it is put beyond all cavil &amp; <lb xml:id="l40"/>not only so but also to shew out of Sacred History <del type="cancelled">that</del> by ex<lb xml:id="l41"/>amples in <del type="cancelled">distant</del> ages <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">before Ieroboam's times</add> that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Israelites &amp; their forefathers <lb xml:id="l42"/><del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">who</unclear></del> forsook not <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">absolutely</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God when they fell into Idolatry <lb xml:id="l43"/>but only joyned to his <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>worship</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> adoration of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gods of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l44"/>Gentiles as these did since Ieroboam: <del type="strikethrough">whence it seems</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">And this I shall do that it may <del type="strikethrough">plain</del> appear that <choice><abbr>Is:</abbr><expan>Israel</expan></choice></add> <del type="cancelled">to <lb xml:id="l45"/> follow</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">most likely to be true</del></add> <choice><sic>that Israel</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <del type="strikethrough">in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> midst of <del type="cancelled">her</del></del> during all her abomi<lb xml:id="l46"/>nations from first to last <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">scarce</add> ever forsooke <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> true God but <lb xml:id="l47"/>only corrupted his worship by <del type="cancelled"><unclear cert="low" reason="del">the</unclear></del> mingling their own inventi<lb xml:id="l48"/>ons <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> it as too many <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> neighbouring</add> Christians dayly do. upon <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l49"/>account of <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> corruptions <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">if</add> they are <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">at any time</add> said to forsake &amp; reject him <lb xml:id="l50"/>no more is to be understood by that but only that they forsook &amp; reject<lb xml:id="l51"/>ed his laws</p>
<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par6"><del type="strikethrough">*  &amp; hence I gather</del> before them for in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 33<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> vers it is express<lb xml:id="l52"/>ly said <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">accord</del></add> that the new nations feared <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord &amp; served there own <lb xml:id="l53"/>Gods after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> manner of the nation<del type="cancelled">s</del> whome they carried away <lb xml:id="l54"/>from thence that is after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> manner of Israel. Thus runs <choice><abbr>o<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>our</expan></choice> English translation  but yet <choice><abbr>bec:</abbr><expan>because</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> original <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="1" unit="words"/></del> is capable of being <lb xml:id="l55"/>otherwise translated I shall not lay <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> stress upon this place <lb xml:id="l56"/>but shew you <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> matter of fact from other characters <del type="cancelled">of</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">in</add> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l57"/>history. And first whereas it is said that at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> first coming of <lb xml:id="l58"/><choice><sic>of</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> new nations to dwell in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> cities of Samaria <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">they feared not the Lord &amp; therefore</add> the Lord sent <lb xml:id="l59"/>Lions among them <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> slew some of them: <del type="strikethrough">because th</del> one may hence <lb xml:id="l60"/>infer that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Lord had been feared in those regions till that time <lb xml:id="l61"/>&amp; that he sent in these Lyons becaus his worship began now to cease  <lb xml:id="l62"/>out of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> land: for <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">if</add> <del type="strikethrough">had h<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">is</add> sent in those Lyo</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><choice><sic>had</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> his <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>worship</expan></choice> ceased there before <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <pb xml:id="p003" n="3"/> of Gods people <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> are every where in scripture called whore<lb xml:id="l63"/>dome <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" extent="2" unit="chars"/></del> much be wors  then <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> abominations of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> heathens <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l64"/>are never called by that name, God being as he sometimes <lb xml:id="l65"/>calls him self, <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Husband of his people, but not of any other <lb xml:id="l66"/>nation: &amp; this abomination must <del type="strikethrough">because</del> be <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice>  wors because <lb xml:id="l67"/>it was done not <del type="strikethrough">after <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> </del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">upon a</add> forgetting of their God, but even <lb xml:id="l68"/>while they acknowledged him &amp; pretended to honour him.
