                <p xml:id="par1">18 Carol. II, Chap. v. No moneys leviable &amp; payable by this Act <lb xml:id="l1"/>shall be converted to any other use or uses whatsoever other then to <lb xml:id="l2"/>the defraying th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> charge or expence of the Mint or Mints, and <del type="blockStrikethrough">[that]</del> <lb xml:id="l3"/>of the assaying melting down <del type="strikethrough">&amp; coyning</del> wast &amp; coynage of gold &amp; silver <lb xml:id="l4"/>&amp; the encouragement of bringing in of gold &amp; silver <del type="strikethrough">to be coyned</del> into <lb xml:id="l5"/>the said Mint or Mints there to be coyned &amp;c <del type="blockStrikethrough">[<del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> The first I take to be <lb xml:id="l6"/>the charge of supporting a standing Mint, the second to be the f<del type="over">irs</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ur</add>t<add place="inline" indicator="no">her</add> <lb xml:id="l7"/>charge of carrying on the coynage in that Mint. And by the next <lb xml:id="l8"/>clause of the Act the first is limited to 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> for preventing extrava<lb xml:id="l9"/>gance, the other left unlimited &amp; appropriated <del type="cancelled">for</del> to the coinage for <lb xml:id="l10"/>encouraging the same. The words are]</del> And it is hereby further enacted <lb xml:id="l11"/>That there shall not be issued out of the Exchequer of the said <lb xml:id="l12"/>moneys, in any one year for the fees &amp; salaries of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l13"/>Mint or Mints &amp; towards the providing maintaining &amp; repairing <lb xml:id="l14"/>of the houses Offices &amp; Buildings &amp; other <del type="blockStrikethrough">[standing]</del> necessaries for <lb xml:id="l15"/>assaying melting down &amp; coyning, above the summ of three thousand <lb xml:id="l16"/>pounds sterling money, &amp; the overplus of the said moneys so kept <lb xml:id="l17"/>as aforesaid shall be imployed for &amp; towards the <del type="blockStrikethrough">[contingent]</del> <lb xml:id="l18"/>expence wast &amp; charg<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add> of assaying melting down &amp; coynage &amp; <lb xml:id="l19"/>buying in of gold &amp; silver to coyn &amp; not otherwise. <del type="blockStrikethrough">[Here by <lb xml:id="l20"/>other necessaries I understand <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">things necessary for constituting a standing Mint as</add> a convenient Hearth Chimne<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">s</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add> &amp; closet <lb xml:id="l21"/>the Assay Office, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">locks to the doors</add> Gates to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint &amp;c <add place="inline" indicator="no">These &amp; the buildings come into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Wardens Acc<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></add></del></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">The salaries from the time of making this Act have amounted to <lb xml:id="l22"/><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">2</add>600<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> &amp; sometimes above &amp; there have remained only 400<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice>  <lb xml:id="l23"/>for the buildings &amp; other necessaries. And the buildings alone have usu<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l24"/>ally am<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>unted to two or three hundred &amp; sometimes almost 400<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> per <choice><abbr>a<hi rend="overline">n</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">In the 4<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> &amp; 5<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> year of her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> another Act passed for <lb xml:id="l25"/>enlarging the sum of 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> to that of 3500<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> per <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">an</hi></abbr><expan>annum</expan></choice> without <lb xml:id="l26"/>making any other alteration in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> former Act. And thereupon the <lb xml:id="l27"/>Moneyers were allowed a salary of 400<hi rend="superscript">l</hi> &amp; the salarys <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">of</add> the Clerks <lb xml:id="l28"/>were intended to be augmented: but several buildings being ready to <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">drop</unclear></del> <lb xml:id="l29"/>drop, <del type="strikethrough">there</del> it was thought fit to rebuild them first. And these have cost <lb xml:id="l30"/>about 8 or 9 hundred pounds or above. Two years ago the Engineers <lb xml:id="l31"/>shop was rebuilt &amp; cost about 3<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">9</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">5</add>9<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> whereof <del type="strikethrough">about</del> 183<hi rend="superscript">li</hi> comes <lb xml:id="l32"/>into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Account of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> year 1712 &amp; 176<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> is reserved for the last year.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">In the Indenture of the Mint there is a clause that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l33"/>charges of making the bullion agreea<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>le to standard shall be born <lb xml:id="l34"/>&amp; sustained out of the Revenue arising to her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> by vertue of <lb xml:id="l35"/>the coynage Act: <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> clause would have been needless had that charge <lb xml:id="l36"/>been recconned <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>in the 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>. This clause is a Voucher to the <choice><abbr>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Master</expan></choice> for <lb xml:id="l37"/>the charges of Assaying &amp; Allay, The Act of 18 Carol. II is a Voucher to him for the <lb xml:id="l38"/>charges of the Assay Office, &amp; the standing practise <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>f placing the charge of fu<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>na<lb xml:id="l39"/>ces in his <choice><abbr>Acc<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Account</expan></choice> is a voucher for that Article. No part of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> 3000<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> should come into <lb xml:id="l40"/>the Master's Account except the salaries pa<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add>able to himself &amp; those under him.</p>
