                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">The Informa<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of <del type="strikethrough">Iane Iuxon</del> Richard Backe of Leominster <lb xml:id="l1"/>in <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> County of Hereford Dyer and Clothworker taken this 12<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>. <lb xml:id="l2"/>day of November Anno D<hi rend="overline">ni</hi> 1698</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">Who saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a year and a half ago this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> was in company <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Thomas <lb xml:id="l3"/>Yarnold of Leominster aforesaid Glassier and Katherine his wife at Leominst<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</orig><reg>er</reg></choice> afo<choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">resd.</hi></abbr><expan>resaid</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l4"/>and there the said Katherine Yarnold did propose to this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> her husband <lb xml:id="l5"/>would make false and counterfeit milld money and she would have this <lb xml:id="l6"/><choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> to put it off or pay it away an equall share in the proffit thereof but this <lb xml:id="l7"/><choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> being very unwilling to be anyway to p<gap reason="hand" unit="chars" extent="4"/>ed in such a bad p<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>r</reg></choice>actise <lb xml:id="l8"/>as making of bad money and <choice><sic>enqing</sic><corr>enquiring</corr></choice> of the illegallity thereof the said Thomas <lb xml:id="l9"/>Yarnold and K<hi rend="overline">ath.</hi> his wife said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> what money they intended to make should <lb xml:id="l10"/>be as good as any <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> was coyned in the Kings mint so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> no body would be <lb xml:id="l11"/>cheated or <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">rummaged</unclear> by taking of it whereupon this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> did agree to be <lb xml:id="l12"/>concerning in putting of bad money as aforesaid, and the said Yarnold did declare <lb xml:id="l13"/>that he believed he could make money and that his father and another had <lb xml:id="l14"/>done it, and that about a month after this Informant saw the said Yarnold <lb xml:id="l15"/>in his own house in Leominster aforesaid mould a pair of Flasks with burnt <lb xml:id="l16"/>Alaboster and a Milld shilling and took this shilling out of the Flask and run <lb xml:id="l17"/>melted metall into the mould and cast 3 or 4 milld shillings one after another but <lb xml:id="l18"/>at different tymes but the edges of the said shillings were not well cast so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l19"/>this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> and the said Yarnold did conclude not to be any further concern<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l20"/>in making of false money at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> tyme, but <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a quarter of a year after <lb xml:id="l21"/>the <choice><abbr>s<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Thomas Yarnold told this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he had been with one <lb xml:id="l22"/>W<hi rend="overline">illm</hi> Mawne who then lived in the <choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>par</reg></choice>ish of Midleton in County of <lb xml:id="l23"/>Hereford Yeoman and that the said Mawne had told him that he

                    <choice><sic>make</sic><corr>made</corr></choice> counterfeit money and the said Yarnold said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he believed he <lb xml:id="l24"/>could make false money for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he supposed the said Mawne had <lb xml:id="l25"/>been concerned with Yarnold's father in assisting him to make <lb xml:id="l26"/>counterfeit money in imita<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of the <choice><abbr>Curr<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Current</expan></choice> Coyn of this Kingdom <lb xml:id="l27"/>and the said Mawne and one Francis Eno of the <choice><abbr>s<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Leominster <lb xml:id="l28"/>Blacksmith were one tyme drinking togeather at the said Yarnold's <lb xml:id="l29"/>house and the said Yarnold went into the room where they had <lb xml:id="l30"/>been drinking imediatly after <choice><sic>the</sic><corr cert="high">they</corr></choice> went away imediatly and found <lb xml:id="l31"/>a paper with Clippings in it fa<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">l</add>len upon the floor and that he <lb xml:id="l32"/>left <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> same where he found them and the said Mawne retain<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l33"/>in a litle time and said he had left something in the room <lb xml:id="l34"/>where he had been drinking, and went into it and carry<choice><abbr><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</abbr><expan>ed</expan></choice> away <lb xml:id="l35"/>the Clippings with him as Yarnold told this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l36"/>said Yarnold did importune this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> to go with him to <lb xml:id="l37"/>Mawne to talk with him <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> making of counterfeit money <lb xml:id="l38"/>and <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a fortnight after this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> did go to <lb xml:id="l39"/>mawns house and did then appoint a time togeather when <lb xml:id="l40"/>Mawne should make and <choice><abbr>experim<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>experiment</expan></choice> of casting counterfeit money <lb xml:id="l41"/>and the said Yarnold did buy arsnick and salt petre morder <lb xml:id="l42"/>there to and shew<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> them to this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> and this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> went <lb xml:id="l43"/>to the said Mawns house <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a week after in company with the <lb xml:id="l44"/>said Yarnold and <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add>he said <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> did then and there see the <lb xml:id="l45"/>said Mawne cast one half Crown in sixpence and <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 3 or <lb xml:id="l46"/>4<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. all counterfeit money and the edges of the said money were not <lb xml:id="l47"/>fairly cast and Mawn tryed to edge one shilling by a Tool like <lb xml:id="l48"/>an Iron Chissell but could not edge it well And this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l49"/>further sayth <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> March last past the said Mawne and one <lb xml:id="l50"/>who went by the name of Edward Iones of Burrisson <lb xml:id="l51"/>near Tenbury in the Borders of Worcestershire and Shrop<choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">sh</hi></abbr><expan>shire</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l52"/>a Smith and George Hampton of Dudley in Worcest<choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">ersh</hi></abbr><expan>ershire</expan></choice> in <lb xml:id="l53"/>Staffordshire Smith came also togeather to this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l54"/>to Leominster and shewed him a pair of Shilling Dyes or Stamps <lb xml:id="l55"/>and a Mill for edging of Shillings and offered to sell <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> for 3<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">ll</hi></hi>. <lb xml:id="l56"/>to this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> but he did refuse t<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">l</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add> buy them and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l57"/>aprill last he saw the said Iones and Hampton counterfeit <lb xml:id="l58"/>the <choice><abbr>Curr<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Current</expan></choice> Coyn of this Kingdom at Iones's house at Burrison <lb xml:id="l59"/>aforesaid by stamping of shillings. Hampton blancht <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Copper <lb xml:id="l60"/>of which the false money was made and beat <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> metall into plates <lb xml:id="l61"/>and cut it round Iones filed it round and he and Hampton stamped <lb xml:id="l62"/>it togeather and Hampton edged and they told this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l63"/>the stamps and Edger were Hamptons and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> they were <lb xml:id="l64"/>made by Hamptons brother who liveth in Birmingham <lb xml:id="l65"/>and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Hampton told the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> one m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="3"/> Perks <lb xml:id="l66"/>an Iron monger of Ludlow in Shropshire had a <lb xml:id="l67"/>considerable quantity of their money at the rate of

                    twenty <choice><orig>5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>.</orig><reg>five shillings</reg></choice> for 20<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> the said Iones told this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> his father Iones <lb xml:id="l68"/>who lives near Burrisson aforesaid was privy to his making of false mon<choice><orig>'</orig><reg>e</reg></choice>y <lb xml:id="l69"/>and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Iones Senior used frequently to buy sheep and horses and let his son E<hi rend="overline">dw</hi><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. <lb xml:id="l70"/>Iones have the payment of the money by means thereof he used to pay away <lb xml:id="l71"/>counterfeit money amongst good and that the said Mawne told this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l72"/>that the said Iones senior and himsel<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add>e used frequently to make false <lb xml:id="l73"/>and counterfeit money of the old Coyn and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> in aprill and may last past <lb xml:id="l74"/>he this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> had severall times counterfeit money of the said Edward <lb xml:id="l75"/>Iones and George Hampton to the value of <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 5<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">ll</hi></hi>. and bought some of <lb xml:id="l76"/>it at the rate of 28<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of bad for 20<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. goo<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">d</add> money and after the rate of 30<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> for 2<unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">0</unclear><hi rend="superscript">s</hi> <lb xml:id="l77"/>and that afterwards this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> sold part of the said counterfeit money to the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l78"/>Thomas Yarnold and his wife at the rate of 24<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of bad for 20<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> good <lb xml:id="l79"/>and that this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> sold 12<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of the said counterfeit money to the said <lb xml:id="l80"/>Francis Eno and <unclear reason="hand" cert="high">Erie</unclear> gave him 9<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of good money for it and told him <lb xml:id="l81"/><choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he the said Eno had bought counterfeit money of the said Mawne <lb xml:id="l82"/>which he believed to be made by the same persons which made the <lb xml:id="l83"/>said false money which this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> sold him as aforesaid and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he <lb xml:id="l84"/>gave Mawne after the rate of 20<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of good money for 26<hi rend="superscript">s</hi>. of bad <lb xml:id="l85"/>money.— And this <choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> further saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> the beginning <lb xml:id="l86"/>of Iune last past the said George Hampton and his wife came to this <lb xml:id="l87"/><choice><abbr>Inform<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Informant</expan></choice> to Leominster and did tell him <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> a <choice><abbr>Ge<hi rend="overline">nt</hi>.</abbr><expan>Gentleman</expan></choice> who lived near <lb
