                <p rend="center" xml:id="par1">The Informa<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on of Mary Adams <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> wife of <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames Adams of Kings street <lb xml:id="l1"/>in Bloomsbury <choice><abbr>D<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>Doctor</expan></choice> of physick 7 Iuly 1698</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">She saith <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> a <choice><sic>litle</sic><corr>little</corr></choice> before <choice><sic>Michalmas</sic><corr>Michaelmas</corr></choice> was a twelve month her <choice><abbr>bro<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>brother</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l2"/>Henry Atkinson and Iane Biggs <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Deverall <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Atkinson being <lb xml:id="l3"/>prisoners in the Gatehouse for coyning M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Porter of the Queens Head <lb xml:id="l4"/>Inn in the Bu<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">r</hi></orig><reg>rr</reg></choice>ough of Southwark carried the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> in a <lb xml:id="l5"/>Coach to the house of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Gibbans by Charing Cross telling her <lb xml:id="l6"/>that the said Gibbons had a great interest in m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Dan and m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <lb xml:id="l7"/>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Leger and and could command them to use their endeavo<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</orig><reg>ur</reg></choice> to take <lb xml:id="l8"/>Evidence <choice><abbr>ag<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>against</expan></choice> her brother and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> there must be money to do it but <lb xml:id="l9"/>she must first speak with Gibbons to know of him how the <lb xml:id="l10"/>business must be mannaged. <choice><orig>a</orig><reg>A</reg></choice>ccordingly she there spake with <lb xml:id="l11"/>Gibbons in private and <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> past between them the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> did <lb xml:id="l12"/>not hear she sayth also that they Dined there and before Dinn<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>er</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l13"/>one M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Roger Cogswell came in and went into a room <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi>.</abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> Gibbons <lb xml:id="l14"/>and mrs Porter to talk togeather the <choice><abbr>sd</abbr><expan>said</expan></choice> Cogswell being a great <lb xml:id="l15"/>acquaintance of them both and afterwards both Coggswell and <lb xml:id="l16"/>m<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Porter said to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> there would be nothing done <lb xml:id="l17"/>without money and the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> told <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> that money should <lb xml:id="l18"/>not be wanting if <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> would save her brother she sayth also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l19"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Gibbons seemed <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi>.</abbr><expan>then</expan></choice> shy of trusting her with their secretts <lb xml:id="l20"/>but yet told her in <choice><abbr>gen<hi rend="superscript">ll</hi>.</abbr><expan>generall</expan></choice> that he would do her brother all the <lb xml:id="l21"/>service that lay in his power and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she and M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Porter went from <lb xml:id="l22"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Gibbons's to the Gatehouse and so soon as she had seen her <lb xml:id="l23"/>brother Henry Atkinson there she went away and left M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Porter <lb xml:id="l24"/>there to acquaint her brother how things stood</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> sayth also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> a few dayes after she went with mrs <lb xml:id="l25"/>Porter to m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Roger Cogswells above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">con</hi></orig><reg>tion</reg></choice>ed at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l26"/>Rose and Crown ale house in the park near <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint in <lb xml:id="l27"/>Southwark and there m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Cogswell said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> there would be <lb xml:id="l28"/>nothing done without <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> summ and the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> asking <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice>

                summ mrs Porter answered 80<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi>. and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></abbr><expan>then</expan></choice> naming <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>what</expan></choice> money she had already and <lb xml:id="l29"/>owning <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she had received a hundred pounds of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Deponent's <choice><abbr>bro<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>brother</expan></choice> in clipt <lb xml:id="l30"/>money she said <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she had laid out a great deale of it allready and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l31"/>she would go to m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Coles the Goldsmith to get 10<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> of him She sayth that so <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l32"/>afterwards she and M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Porter going to the Gatehouse to see her <lb xml:id="l33"/>brother saw one M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Southward in the street and m<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi> Porters sent <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l34"/>Coachman to call him to them and told the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> that he could <choice><orig/><reg><supplied reason="omitted" cert="low">do</supplied></reg></choice> her <choice><abbr>bro<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>brother</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l35"/>g<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">re</add>at service and thereupon the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> began an acquaintance <lb xml:id="l36"/>with the said Southward and a few dayes after went with him to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> <lb xml:id="l37"/>Legers house near the Red Lyon square and thereafter S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Leger had spoke <lb xml:id="l38"/>with Southward he told <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> that he would do all he could for her <lb xml:id="l39"/>brother and lay it as heavy as he could upon the woman (meaning <lb xml:id="l40"/>M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Biggs) and that he did not fear but he would come off And <lb xml:id="l41"/>S<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>. Legers wife spake to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to the same purpose.</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">She sayth also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> afterwards meeting M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Southard at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Gatehouse <lb xml:id="l42"/>he prepared to lay down Twenty seaven pound upon the Deponent's <lb xml:id="l43"/>Note to make up the 4 score pounds which they demanded before any <lb xml:id="l44"/>thing could be done, and that the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> scrupling to do it M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Biggs <lb xml:id="l45"/>above men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned reflected upon her as if she loved her <choice><abbr>bro<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>brother</expan></choice> so <choice><sic>litle</sic><corr>little</corr></choice> <lb xml:id="l46"/>that she had rather see him perrish then part with so small a summ <lb xml:id="l47"/>to save him and thereupon the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> did give a Note to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> said <lb xml:id="l48"/>Southard for <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> summ and then <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> that time the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> and m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.  <lb xml:id="l49"/>Southward goign to m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Gibbons's m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Gibbons told her <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she needed <lb xml:id="l50"/>not to fear for he would warrant <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> her brother would do well</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">The <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> sayth also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she went one morning with M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi> Porter <lb xml:id="l51"/>to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Coles the Goldsmith to see if they could get 10<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi>. of him but <lb xml:id="l52"/>found him not at home<choice><orig>–</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> She sayth also <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> she heard mrs <lb xml:id="l53"/>Porter say <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> of the <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">1</add>00<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi>. which her brother left in her hands <lb xml:id="l54"/>she had sold 20<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi>. for 10<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> odd money and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> besides it had cost a great <lb xml:id="l55"/>deale of money in going up and down</p>

Porter represented to her <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l56"/>80<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> which she insisted upon to be raised for saving her <choice><abbr>bro<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</abbr><expan>brother</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l57"/>and M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>. Biggs should be kept by her and her and her friends if they <lb xml:id="l58"/>escaped but if one of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">m</hi>.</abbr><expan>them</expan></choice> only escaped <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">n</hi>.</abbr><expan>then</expan></choice> 40 should be kept and 40<hi rend="superscript">℔</hi> <lb xml:id="l59"/>returned back to the part escaping and if both were condemned the <lb xml:id="l60"/>whole should be returned to their order</p>
