Butler of Ruport Street in piccadilly <lb xml:id="l1"/><choice><abbr>Gent</abbr><expan>Gentleman</expan></choice> 2<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. day <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>une 1698</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2">He saith that moses Stringer of Vitters street in York buildings Chymist <lb xml:id="l2"/>hath an Exchequer bill which was cancelled and that the cross <lb xml:id="l3"/>wherewith it was cancelled is done out and the <del type="strikethrough">Lines</del> paper <lb xml:id="l4"/>where the Lynes of the cross are done out is mended with a patch <lb xml:id="l5"/>on the back side to strengthen it and the said

                    Stringer did put off the said Bill to one m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Cooper at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Harty<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l6"/>choak in Cannon street in London and Cooper put it off to others <lb xml:id="l7"/>but the fraud being detected the Bill was returned to Cooper <lb xml:id="l8"/>and by him to Stringer in whose hands the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> saw it <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l9"/>3 dayes ago since it was returned to the said Stringer and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/>the said Stringer did then viz on Munday or Tuesday last <lb xml:id="l11"/>offer the said bill to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> desiring him to put it off <lb xml:id="l12"/>and saying that he could get <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">it</add> off better then he could do</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par3">And that he hath known <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></add> Trott <choice><abbr>al<hi rend="overline">s</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Carter <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 6 years and <lb xml:id="l13"/>while the trade of Clipping old money was in fashion he and his <lb xml:id="l14"/>reputed wife Katherine Carter <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ordan <choice><abbr><hi rend="overline">als</hi></abbr><expan>alias</expan></choice> Mathews were concern<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l15"/>in the same and that the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> comeing to lodge in the Roome <lb xml:id="l16"/>where the said Tho and <hi rend="overline">Kath</hi> lodged before found Clippings of <lb xml:id="l17"/>money in the Cranies of the room and that he hath seen French <lb xml:id="l18"/>pistolls Spanish pistolls and <choice><sic>Doable</sic><corr>Double</corr></choice> ounes also (ie Double pistols<choice><orig/><reg><supplied reason="omitted">)</supplied></reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l19"/>all counterfeit in the hands of the said Tho Carter and that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l20"/>said Carter hath offer<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> the same to the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to put off <lb xml:id="l21"/>and that the said Carter did tell the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he had a <lb xml:id="l22"/>hand in making the same he sayth that he hath seen the <lb xml:id="l23"/>said Carter guild mill'd shillings and six pences and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l24"/>he hath also seen Fitz Gerald guild the same and that they <lb xml:id="l25"/>guilt them to buy bills with them after the following <choice><abbr>m<hi rend="overline">ann</hi><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>manner</expan></choice>. <lb xml:id="l26"/>They had 2 purses exactly a like the one with good Guineas or <lb xml:id="l27"/>good broad pieces the other with guilt milld shillings <lb xml:id="l28"/>or guilt broad shillings in it one of <del type="strikethrough">false guilt</del> these <lb xml:id="l29"/>purses they offered for the bill and then examining the bill <lb xml:id="l30"/>they took an opportunity to exchange the purse of good <lb xml:id="l31"/>Gold for the other of guilt money and then leaving the purse <lb xml:id="l32"/>in pawn took the bill to examin it pretending to return in <lb xml:id="l33"/>half an hour but return no more And the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> hath heard <lb xml:id="l34"/>that William Newark and <space dim="horizontal" unit="chars" extent="6"/> Hunt have thus cheated <lb xml:id="l35"/>men of their bills and either brothers or brothers in Law and <lb xml:id="l36"/>that <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>onathon Newark the unkle of the said Newark <lb xml:id="l37"/>did <choice><sic>latly</sic><corr>lately</corr></choice> propose to the <choice><abbr>Depone<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to be concerned in putting <lb xml:id="l38"/>Cheats upon Merchants by forging of Merchants Letters <lb xml:id="l39"/>and bills and that one Gardiner a lusty fatt man living <lb xml:id="l40"/>as the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> hath heard at the punch boll in Westm<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi>.</orig><reg>inster</reg></choice> is <lb xml:id="l41"/>reputed to have been concerned in clipping and coyning <lb xml:id="l42"/>and other rogueries and to be the patrone and <lb xml:id="l43"/>receiver of Ill men at whose house they have

                    their Rendesvour and that Tho: Hall at <choice><sic>litle</sic><corr>little</corr></choice> man hath told him this <lb xml:id="l44"/><choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> that he the said Hall who now lives by London wall next <lb xml:id="l45"/>Door to the pettycoat and one Bainbugg <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">fellow</unclear> <choice><abbr>serv<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi>.</abbr><expan>servants</expan></choice> in King <lb xml:id="l46"/><choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ames's mint in Dublin have coyned togeather meaning as the <lb xml:id="l47"/><choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> understood him in England and that the said Hall offer<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi></orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> the <lb xml:id="l48"/><choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> to be concerned with him in coyning <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> 2 or 3 years <lb xml:id="l49"/>ago and that last Sunday the said Hall told the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> that he <lb xml:id="l50"/>should soon be in a better condi<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on and was going to take a <lb xml:id="l51"/>Great house near the Customhouse in Thames street and he <lb xml:id="l52"/>desired the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> not to go into the Inner room of his house <lb xml:id="l53"/>where some company were saying that some of them knew <lb xml:id="l54"/>him and it would be a disgrace to appear in that guarb</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4">And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Rob<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> Attey told him <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> a day or two before he was <lb xml:id="l55"/>committ<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> to the Marshalsea for coyning that he had given <choice><abbr>abo<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>about</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l56"/>17<choice><orig>.</orig><reg/></choice> or 19 Dyes to the Warden of the Mint and had got 10 more <lb xml:id="l57"/>and was going to work again and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Bainbugg abovemen<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>on<choice><orig>d</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> <lb xml:id="l58"/>lives or did <choice><sic>latly</sic><corr>lately</corr></choice> live at a <choice><sic>Chanders</sic><corr>Chandlers</corr></choice> ship in Wildstreet</p>
                
                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">And that some things <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> have passed between the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> and <lb xml:id="l59"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Carter have been betray<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> by M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Inch by which the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l60"/>Vehemen<add place="supralinear" indicator="no">t</add>ly suspects <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> there is a correspondence between m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <lb xml:id="l61"/>Inch (whom he takes to be one of the Clerks of the Bank) and m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. <lb xml:id="l62"/>Carter and that when the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> was heretofore upon doing some <lb xml:id="l63"/>service to the Banck of England and was betray<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.</orig><reg>ed</reg></choice> and hindred by <lb xml:id="l64"/>a person whom the Bank imployed (as he has men<choice><orig><hi rend="overline">c</hi></orig><reg>ti</reg></choice>oned in another <lb xml:id="l65"/>paper he understands that person to be M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Inch as being the only <lb xml:id="l66"/><choice><orig>ꝑ</orig><reg>per</reg></choice>son imployed by the Banck in that <choice><abbr>matt<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>matter</expan></choice>. And <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> Pearce <lb xml:id="l67"/>Butler a Soldjer or pretended Soldjer belonging to the Guards <lb xml:id="l68"/>being <choice><sic>latly</sic><corr>lately</corr></choice> taken <choice><sic>upp</sic><corr>up</corr></choice> in Surrey and bayled out of the marshalsea <lb xml:id="l69"/>for putting off Counterfeit pistolls corresponds with Carter Fitz Gerald <lb xml:id="l70"/>Thomas White M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Tilly Warden of the Fleet Beauchamp <unclear reason="hand" cert="low">+</unclear> others <lb xml:id="l71"/>and is suspected to have his pistolls of that <unclear reason="hand" cert="medium">Guang</unclear> and <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he this <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l72"/>is told by m<hi rend="superscript">r</hi>. Gunn of the Temple and late prisoner with the <choice><abbr>Depon<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Deponent</expan></choice> in <lb xml:id="l73"/>the Kings Bench and of Carter, Fitz Gerald and Tilly <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> he the said <lb xml:id="l74"/>Gunn is very sure <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>that</expan></choice> White Fitz Gerald and Tilly have a workhouse <lb xml:id="l75"/>some where in Westm<choice><orig><hi rend="superscript">r</hi></orig><reg>inster</reg></choice>.
