                <p xml:id="par2">Honoured <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice></p>
                
               <p xml:id="par3">I was not a little surprized at the news your last brought, <lb xml:id="l1"/>I can hardly belive M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason will find any body but himself <lb xml:id="l2"/>will undertake to say he was treated here by the Warden and m<del type="strikethrough">y</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">e</add> <lb xml:id="l3"/><del type="cancelled">self</del> like a Footman, I am sure we both <del type="strikethrough">attended</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">went to meet</add> him as far <lb xml:id="l4"/>as Ruabon, which is 4 miles beyond Wrexham and <del type="strikethrough">good</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">full</add> 15 measured <lb xml:id="l5"/>miles from hence, and we treated him and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hanmer and other <lb xml:id="l6"/>he brought along with him to the expence of 3 Guineas, the night <lb xml:id="l7"/>he came <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">hither</add>, and the Warden gave him eight or ten bottles of Wine <lb xml:id="l8"/><add place="lineBeginning supralinear" indicator="no">at another time</add> in the <choice><abbr>Tre<hi rend="overline">ar</hi>y</abbr><expan>Treasury</expan></choice>, and treated <del type="strikethrough">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clark</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">him</add> and <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></add> Clark <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">again</add> at my Lodgings as <lb xml:id="l9"/>far <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">as</add> he would accept; and during his stay here I attended him with <lb xml:id="l10"/>all the respect I know how to pay; but I found him very cold towards <lb xml:id="l11"/>me, and wholly addicted to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clark; and his <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">chief</add> business seemed to be to <lb xml:id="l12"/>oblige the Warden to restore Boules and take of Lewis's suspension; in which <lb xml:id="l13"/>case he offered his word, that no more should be said of the affidavit <lb xml:id="l14"/>of undue preference, but if he refused, he was known to be a very good <lb xml:id="l15"/>solicitor, and severall that stood in his way had felt the effects of it. <lb xml:id="l16"/>The Warden however persisting that he would waite an answer from M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l17"/>Newton in Lewis's case, and that Boules's place being supplyed by <lb xml:id="l18"/>another he could do nothing in that neither; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason went away <lb xml:id="l19"/>from him dissatisfied, and the next day twas buzzed about in the <lb xml:id="l20"/>mint that Treasonable practises would be swor<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add> against the War<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l21"/>den, and accordingly that night M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Hanmer got Alderman Lloydd to <lb xml:id="l22"/>the Tavern, and there drew up the affidavit with his own hand <add place="inline" indicator="no">(</add>as <lb xml:id="l23"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Williams informs me<del type="over">,</del><add place="over" indicator="no">)</add> there was no other occasion fiven for <lb xml:id="l24"/>making this affidavit, than what I told you in my last, which the <lb xml:id="l25"/>persons <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">who</add> sign<del type="over">in</del><add place="over" indicator="no">ed</add><choice><sic>y</sic><corr type="delText">y</corr></choice> the <del type="strikethrough">affidavit</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">certificate</add> inclosed therin will testify upon oath <lb xml:id="l26"/>if occasion require. I hope M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Ma<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del">s</unclear></del>son considers that words spoken <lb xml:id="l27"/><del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>n the 9<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of February, ought not to be conceald till the 21<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of <lb xml:id="l28"/>Iuly, if they be dangerous to the Government; wherby this whole <lb xml:id="l29"/>affaire will pass for the effect of Malice and dsign in all un<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">b</add>iasd <lb xml:id="l30"/>judges. And Williams told me that Hanmer had <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">they</add> formed a designe <lb xml:id="l31"/>to have gotten my place, if he could have trappt me saying or <lb xml:id="l32"/>doing anything they could lay hold on, but by the advice of a <lb xml:id="l33"/>friend that know them I scapt the snare, as I have formerly <lb xml:id="l34"/>given you an exact account. I rejoyne that you are resolved

                   not to leave the Town till the business be fully over, and if the <lb xml:id="l35"/>Warden be heartily our friend I doubt not <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of</add> the event. By Mondays <lb xml:id="l36"/>post you shall be now of a copy of all the Accounts of our Mint except <lb xml:id="l37"/>what M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clark has had, bhe being not yet come to Town. M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lewis <lb xml:id="l38"/>has not yet delivered in any account in writing, but has now brought <lb xml:id="l39"/>his Ballance to about <del type="over">2</del><add place="over" indicator="no">3</add>0<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi>, tis easy to know the use he may have <lb xml:id="l40"/>made in this long delay. But I shall take care that what he may <lb xml:id="l41"/>have b<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">u</unclear></del><unclear reason="hand" cert="high">o</unclear>rrowed <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to make up his cas<unclear reason="hand">t</unclear></add> shall not be repaid <del type="cancelled">by</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">out of</add> his subsequent cas<unclear reason="hand" cert="low">e</unclear>: for <lb xml:id="l42"/>I have taken such <del type="strikethrough">care of</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">a method for</add> the payments now, that I can bring him <lb xml:id="l43"/>to a ballance upon demand. I do not belive the Lords will thank <lb xml:id="l44"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale for his thus stickling for Lewis when they know the whole <lb xml:id="l45"/>story, nor that they will think him so necessary that the Mint <lb xml:id="l46"/>cannot be without him. As to his being such a Gentleman I am <lb xml:id="l47"/>fully informed his father was a shoemaker in Wrexham, and after<lb xml:id="l48"/>wards kept the poll house there, and some say he sold drink there, <lb xml:id="l49"/>but that is no argument, the man is an ingenious man and well <lb xml:id="l50"/>educated, and till M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clarke blew him up with promises and false <lb xml:id="l51"/>insinuations, was very serviceable in the Mint though always leaning <lb xml:id="l52"/>that way. But perhaps M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Mason thinks all Watchmen Gentlemen <lb xml:id="l53"/>and we Saxons Rogues, Villains &amp;c. tis strange to think a man <lb xml:id="l54"/>so nice as he in point of breeding, who could think a hard word <lb xml:id="l55"/>f<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>om the first officer in the Mint to the last Clerk should require <lb xml:id="l56"/>a standish or more, should be guilty of such Language against <lb xml:id="l57"/>persons who never injured him, and as to all the Mints being said <lb xml:id="l58"/>to be against us, I am sure both the Assaymaster and Monyer <lb xml:id="l59"/>and all the Monyers people are not of that number, and if the <lb xml:id="l60"/>Master and melter have a turn to serve and buy the Clerks to <lb xml:id="l61"/>their Interest, why those should be said to be all the Mint, he <lb xml:id="l62"/>best knows. Tis true the Warden was a Meniall servant of my <lb xml:id="l63"/>Lord Godolphin some years since, and in requitall of his good <lb xml:id="l64"/>services my Lord preferred him to this post here, but he was <lb xml:id="l65"/>far above a footman, and his education shews him to have been <lb xml:id="l66"/>alwais in better circumstances than so, and it may be well supposed <lb xml:id="l67"/>that my Lord would not have thus preferrd him, but that he know <lb xml:id="l68"/>his merit. he has been all along very respectfull to me and I

                   to him, and wee look upon our selves as joyned in Office to <lb xml:id="l69"/>see the Kings business well and faithfully performed. And the exact <lb xml:id="l70"/>care we have taken has occasioned all those fonds, of which this <lb xml:id="l71"/>is a summary account. We were in a manner all strangers when <lb xml:id="l72"/>we mett here at first, and M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clark contending that Boules and Lewis <lb xml:id="l73"/>ought to have the money delivered them by weight only, that they <lb xml:id="l74"/>might report the tale as they pleased, the warden and I opposed <lb xml:id="l75"/>it; and on consult above, it was determined that the money should be deliverd to them, as the Importers <unclear reason="hand">Agouts</unclear>, by Tale as well as <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi>.</abbr><expan>weight</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l76"/>this occasiond the first quarrell, and Clark pretending to take offence <lb xml:id="l77"/>at something that nobody <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">else</add> observed in the Company, went and borrowed <lb xml:id="l78"/>Boules his sword to waylay the Warden as he went home, but this wee <lb xml:id="l79"/>lookt upon as a scarecoew, because he might have met him if he <lb xml:id="l80"/>pleased: this was Octob. 25°. On Nove<hi rend="overline">mb</hi> <hi rend="overline">19</hi> following <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">he</add> being displeased at <lb xml:id="l81"/>the telling of the money, a trick was put upon the Warden by <lb xml:id="l82"/>taking money out of 6 Iourneys, two shillings or half a Crown out <lb xml:id="l83"/>of each, at the time pixing them, as I verily <choice><sic>belive</sic><corr>believe</corr></choice>; and be<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l84"/>cause the Warden assisted the Weigher and teller <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in telling them</add> he pretended that <lb xml:id="l85"/>one of them too, should loose their places for Nealing that money, <lb xml:id="l86"/>sufficiently indicating that he meant the Warden, who as it hapned, did <lb xml:id="l87"/>touch but 3 of those Iourneys, and Brown Clarks <unclear reason="hand">creature</unclear> baggd them <lb xml:id="l88"/>all: and it was observable, these were the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">very</add> first Iourneys that were <lb xml:id="l89"/>reweigh<del type="over">t</del><add place="over" indicator="no">d</add> after telling: this Villanous practise gave me an aversion <lb xml:id="l90"/>to those that were capable of it, and shewd the necessity of standing <lb xml:id="l91"/>form to oppose the<add place="inline" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="strikethrough">or else to</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">if I would not</add> quit my post. On Dece<hi rend="overline">mb</hi> 15 Clark left <lb xml:id="l92"/>us and went to London where he continued till the Latter end of Aprill <lb xml:id="l93"/>during which time I am sure the King and Country were better served <lb xml:id="l94"/>than before or since, as will appear by the Books of the Mint. When <lb xml:id="l95"/>he came back again, he pretended to challenge the Warden, came before <lb xml:id="l96"/>the Hour with his Man and Horses contrary to agreement as the Warden <lb xml:id="l97"/>said) and stand not after it, by which means they fought not, and I <lb xml:id="l98"/>remonstrating the folly of such decisions to both partys, that went <lb xml:id="l99"/>no further. With his return the money received, and the pot and Money assay <lb xml:id="l100"/>proved worse then ever, which being represented to you and the Warden, <lb xml:id="l101"/>Robinson makes his affidavit of undue preference, which being thought <lb xml:id="l102"/>impertinent, Hanmer sweres Treason to as little purpose. Those <lb xml:id="l103"/>are violent attaques upon an innocent man, and may provoke <lb xml:id="l104"/>to some indiscretions those that are matters of more temper then 
                   
                   <addSpan spanTo="#addend002r-01" place="marginLeft" startDescription="the left margin" endDescription="f 2r" resp="#mjh"/>either he or I. I cannot transcribe this long story so entreat your pardon for the blotts therof. Alban Greys note <lb xml:id="l105"/>for the 15<hi rend="superscript"><hi rend="overline">li</hi></hi> was paid by Lewis on the 6<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of March, when I was at London, and is made payable to him; I know <lb xml:id="l106"/>the Warden was willing to oblige him, and might desire Lewis to let him have the money. that is all I know<anchor xml:id="addend002r-01"/> 
                   
                   <addSpan spanTo="#addend002r-02" place="p001v-marginLeft" startDescription="the left margin of f 1v" endDescription="f 2r" resp="#mjh"/>of the matter, save that Gray was solliciting for it before I went out of Chester; if this small summ sticks as <lb xml:id="l107"/>I find it does, I hope that a crime in one Man will be no virtue in another.</p>

                <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par5">The Inclosed letters are true coppies of what past between us <del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>n the <lb xml:id="l108"/>Locking up the <choice><abbr>Treary</abbr><expan>Treasury</expan></choice>, which was the 29<hi rend="superscript">th</hi> of Iuly, we attended the <lb xml:id="l109"/>next morning expecting to hear from M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clark in order to a p<gap reason="hand" unit="chars" extent="3"/>ly <lb xml:id="l110"/>but not <choice><sic>seing</sic><corr>seeing</corr></choice> him we sent him the letter we signed which was left <lb xml:id="l111"/>at his lodgings by 11 in the morning, and instead of answering it as <lb xml:id="l112"/>we expected between 2 and 3 he procured himself to be arrested <lb xml:id="l113"/>by a great friend of Robinsons, whereupon wee had the Officer and <lb xml:id="l114"/>his prisoner and the plaintiff before the Mayor, where the Officer <lb xml:id="l115"/>declared he did it by consent of all parties, and that no action <lb xml:id="l116"/>was enterd, and they were all ashamed aft; the next day about 11 <lb xml:id="l117"/>he sent the answer directly contradicting all we said as to the <lb xml:id="l118"/>accounts, and taking no notice of the demand of a closet to lock <lb xml:id="l119"/>the money up in, which he mai<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">nt</add>ained should only lie in baggs <lb xml:id="l120"/>about the <choice><abbr>tre<hi rend="overline">ar</hi>y</abbr><expan>treasury</expan></choice> floor, from whenev if a bagg were conveyed he <lb xml:id="l121"/>would expect us to make it good. Neither did he ever order or <lb xml:id="l122"/>Williams ever offer, to give Morley the ticketts to enter them, <lb xml:id="l123"/>and as to the Wardens telling M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Clark <hi rend="underline">he had nothing to do in <lb xml:id="l124"/>the <choice><abbr>Tre<hi rend="overline">ar</hi>y</abbr><expan>Treasury</expan></choice></hi>, I was by, and heard no such thing, I will make oath <lb xml:id="l125"/>if need be, and those that pretend he said so, add that he said will <lb xml:id="l126"/>it, <hi rend="underline">till such time as you account for what you have already had.</hi> <lb xml:id="l127"/>for twas unremarkeable Lewis did not go about to make up his account <lb xml:id="l128"/>till after this time. M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lewis Iust now tendered me an account ball<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l129"/>anced desiring me to sign it; I have all the particulars by me, <lb xml:id="l130"/>but cannot get it ready for this post; I hope Monday will <lb xml:id="l131"/>be time enough, when I shall give you a particular <unclear reason="hand">setedute</unclear> <lb xml:id="l132"/>of his bills. Pray excuse any defect in this tedious scrall from <lb xml:id="l133"/>the hast I am in, my last came too late for the post, and cost me <lb xml:id="l134"/>a messenger on purpose. I am.</p>

If you had them not I <lb xml:id="l141"/>can nearly guess what became of <lb xml:id="l142"/>them. Twas a great packet with <lb xml:id="l143"/>one for M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Neale and another for <lb xml:id="l144"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Newton both unsealed.</note>
