    <p xml:id="par3"><hi rend="large">The</hi> two persons who are ordered down to Scotland being sent <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as I presume with</add> <lb xml:id="l2"/><add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes">an intent</add> only to survey the Mine <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">with the ground about it</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> belongs or lately did belong to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn <lb xml:id="l3"/>Ereskin &amp; is said to <del type="strikethrough">be</del> <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no"><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">contein</add></add> silver<add place="inline" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="strikethrough">mine,</del> &amp; to exa<del type="over">i<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add>in the Ore &amp; <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> <lb xml:id="l4"/>under M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haldane <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">send</add> t<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>e brother in law of the said <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Ereskin <lb xml:id="l5"/>&amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haldane <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">living neare the mine &amp;</add> having expressed himself willing to encourage &amp; super<lb xml:id="l6"/>vise the said two men &amp; forward their deisgne: I humbly propose <lb xml:id="l7"/>(pursuant to your <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> directions,) t<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>e<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">s</unclear></del> following instructions as proper <lb xml:id="l8"/>for <del type="strikethrough">the designe of the said two persons.</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">this purpose.</add></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">1</add> That in the presence of substantial witnesses, the<del type="cancelled">y</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="cancelled">the</del> said two men</add> break 
        <lb xml:id="l9"/>off from each of the two veins of Ore which are <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">in</add> the said 
        <lb xml:id="l10"/>mine, about six or eight pounds of Ore &amp; seale up the same 
        <lb xml:id="l11"/>in two papers with inscriptions upon them denoting what 
        <lb xml:id="l12"/>vein<del type="strikethrough">s they are</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">each <del type="strikethrough">of them is</del> parcel is</add> taken from; the inscriptions to be signed by the 
        <lb xml:id="l13"/>witnesses, &amp; the two parcells to be packed up together &amp; sent 
        <lb xml:id="l14"/>to London to the Lords <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ers</hi></abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Treasury to be 
        <lb xml:id="l15"/>assayed in London by their Order. The Witnesses may be 
        <lb xml:id="l16"/>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Ha<del type="over">d</del><add place="over" indicator="no">l</add>dane &amp; one or two of his Sons who are <choice><abbr>Parliam<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>Parliament</expan></choice> Men, 
        <lb xml:id="l17"/>&amp; M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Drummond the Warden of the Mint at Edinburgh or 
        <lb xml:id="l18"/>any other Gentleman of credit whom my Lord Lauderdale Gene<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l19"/>ral of the <add place="inline" indicator="no">said</add> Mint shall please to send thither for his own satis<lb xml:id="l20"/>faction &amp; the satisfaction of the Government, &amp; any other person 
        <lb xml:id="l21"/>or persons whom your Lordships <del type="strikethrough">(or <del type="cancelled">the</del> perhaps the Commissioners <lb xml:id="l22"/>for the forfeited estates)</del> shall <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>rder to be present.</p>
        
    <p xml:id="par5"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">2</add> That <del type="cancelled">th</del> in the presence of the same witnesses <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">other</add> pieces of Ore be 
        <lb xml:id="l23"/>broken off from <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">each of</add> the said <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">two</add> veins &amp; assayed<del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">.</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">tw</add>ice or oftener</add> &amp; the assays reported by 
        <lb xml:id="l24"/>the said two men, &amp; signed by the said Witnesses in testimony of their
<lb xml:id="l25"/>being made before them, &amp; sealed up &amp; sent also to the Lords <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">ers</hi></abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> 
        <lb xml:id="l26"/>of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Treasury. <add place="inline interlinear" indicator="no">And that a description of the breadth &amp; depth <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; distance</add> of the said <lb xml:id="l27"/>two veins be also sent &amp; which way they run, &amp; how deep is the Mine</add></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par6"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">3</add> That the Casks (or <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> old Hogsheads &amp; Barrells) which were 
            <lb xml:id="l28"/>filled with about 40 Tunns of Ore dugg <del type="cancelled">of</del> out of the said Mine 
            <lb xml:id="l29"/>by order of the Lady Ereskin in the time of the late rebelli<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>n
            <lb xml:id="l30"/>&amp; buried on the north <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">west</add> side of her house just by the Gate thereof 
            <lb xml:id="l31"/>be enquired <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>fter, &amp; a report made thereof &amp; of what that 
            <lb xml:id="l32"/>Ore holds by the Assay. <del type="blockStrikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>And if the same appear to be silver Ore <lb xml:id="l33"/>that an Order <del type="cancelled">be</del> (such as the Kings Coun<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">c</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">s</add>el shall advise) be sent <lb xml:id="l34"/>down to secure the same.]</del></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par7"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">4.</add> That the Burn or Channel made in the <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">south</add> side of the mountain 
            <lb xml:id="l35"/>by <del type="cancelled">the</del> floods running down about th<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">r</add>ee or four furlongs westward from

            the said mine within <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Ereskins part of the mountain, be 
            <lb xml:id="l36"/>well viewed to see what sparrs &amp; other signes of minerals are found 
            <lb xml:id="l37"/>therein, &amp; if any Ores <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">of</add> Minerals <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or Metalls</add> be found there to <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ssay them 
<lb xml:id="l38"/>&amp; report the produce.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par8"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">5</add> About two miles westward from th<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">e</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add> silver mine there is 
            <lb xml:id="l39"/>a Copper mine said to be very rich in Copper &amp; Silver, so as <del type="strikethrough">to</del>
            <lb xml:id="l40"/><add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes">in a pound of Ore to</add> hold about half a pound of Copper &amp; twelve penny weight of 
            <lb xml:id="l41"/>Silver <del type="strikethrough">in a pound of Ore.</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">&amp; to belong to one who went into <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> rebellion.</add> If <del type="over">a</del><add place="over" indicator="no"><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">two or three <choice><sic>pieces</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add></add> pie<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>e<add place="inline" indicator="no">s</add> <del type="strikethrough">or two</del> of that Ore can 
            <lb xml:id="l42"/>be procured, let it be assayed to See how much Copper &amp; how 
            <lb xml:id="l43"/>much silver it holds. And if there be any other mines within 
            <lb xml:id="l44"/><del type="strikethrough">two or</del> three <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or four</add> miles of the <del type="strikethrough">place</del> silver mine, <del type="strikethrough">to</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">let them</add> examin what 
            <lb xml:id="l45"/>silver the Ore may contein.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par9"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">6.</add> <del type="cancelled">To</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Let them</add> view all <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn Ereskines part of the mountain 
        <lb xml:id="l46"/>&amp; observe what signes of Mineralls may appeare any where 
        <lb xml:id="l47"/>above ground, &amp; report <del type="strikethrough">them</del> what they find<del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">,</add> <add place="inline interlinear" indicator="no">&amp; give the best account <lb xml:id="l48"/>they can of <del type="cancelled">the</del> any other <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">metallic</add> Mines which they can heare of in that mountain.</add></p>
        
        <p xml:id="par10"><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">7</add> I humbly propose also that M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haldane senior be desired 
            <lb xml:id="l49"/>by a Letter from <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">ps</hi></abbr><expan>Lordships</expan></choice> to see that the two Gentlemen sent down 
            <lb xml:id="l50"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">do</add> put these things in execution, &amp; to give them Directions from time <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">to</add> time 
            <lb xml:id="l51"/>to do what he may think further proper for giving his <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> &amp; <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">his</add> 
            <lb xml:id="l52"/>R<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">oyal</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Highness</add> &amp; <choice><abbr>yo<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>your</expan></choice> Lordships Satisfaction in this Matter. And that the two 
            <lb xml:id="l53"/>Gentlemen sent down be ordered to observe the directions of M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Haldane 
            <lb xml:id="l54"/><add place="supralinear lineBeginning" indicator="yes">in making these enquiries &amp; observations<choice><orig/><reg><supplied reason="omitted">.</supplied></reg></choice></add> And that the Earl of Lauderdale General of his <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Mint at 
            <lb xml:id="l55"/>Edinb<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">ur</add>gh be also desired by a Letter to give the two Gentlemen sent 
            <lb xml:id="l56"/>down his protection &amp; encouragement &amp; to send either M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Drummond 
            <lb xml:id="l57"/><del type="strikethrough">the</del> Warden of that Mint or some other <del type="strikethrough">fit</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">intelligent &amp; credible</add> person to the Mine, who 
            <lb xml:id="l58"/>may there see the silver Ore dug out of the Rock &amp; assayed, &amp; may <lb xml:id="l59"/>give his <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> &amp; the Government an account thereof.</p>
        
        <p xml:id="par11">If this Mine shall prove a true silver <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">M</add>ine, the Kings Coun<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l60"/>cil <del type="strikethrough">may</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">learned in <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">the</add><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">m</unclear></del> Law may</add> be consulted about the ri<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">g</add>ht <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> either the king may have 
            <lb xml:id="l61"/>to it as a Royall mine or the <choice><abbr>Comm<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi></abbr><expan>Commissioners</expan></choice> for the forfeited estates 
            <lb xml:id="l62"/>may have to it as a forfeited estate, <del type="cancelled"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add></del>&amp; about 
                <del type="strikethrough">the right which <lb xml:id="l63"/>either of them may have to the 40 Tunns of <del type="cancelled">the</del> Silver Ore,</del>
                <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">the right which either <lb xml:id="l64"/>of them may have to the 40 Tunns of Silver Ore already dug <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">up</add> &amp; about <choice><sic>the</sic><corr type="noText"/></choice></add> 
            <lb xml:id="l65"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> the authority requisite to seize <del type="strikethrough">them &amp;</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">them in order <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">to</add></add> work the Mine &amp; smelt 
            <lb xml:id="l66"/>the Ore;<del type="cancelled">]</del> and <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">also</add> about the Kings right in the Copper Mine two miles 
            <lb xml:id="l67"/>westward, as a Royal Mine rich in Silver, tho not belonging to <choice><abbr>S<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></abbr><expan>Sir</expan></choice> <choice><orig>I</orig><reg>J</reg></choice>ohn 
            <lb xml:id="l68"/>Erskin<del type="cancelled">e</del>. And when the Fact &amp; the Law is known, the <del type="cancelled">Mine</del> Silver Mine &amp; 
            <lb xml:id="l69"/>the Ore may be <choice><sic>sized</sic><corr>seized</corr></choice> as the Law shall direct<add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">in order to be wrought</del></add>, &amp; the Kings right in the 
            <lb xml:id="l70"/>other mine may be <del type="strikethrough">demanded or <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">demo</unclear></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">also</add> asserted.</p>
