        <head xml:id="hd3"><hi rend="largest"><foreign xml:lang="lat">Vicem gerit Illa Tonantis</foreign></hi> <lb xml:id="l1"/><space unit="chars" dim="horizontal" extent="3"/>She is in the place of the Thunderer, or <lb xml:id="l2"/><space unit="chars" dim="horizontal" extent="3"/>She is God's Vicegerent, &amp; <choice><abbr>K. W.<hi rend="superscript">ms</hi></abbr><expan>King Williams</expan></choice> Successour.</head>

<p rend="indent0" xml:id="par1"><hi rend="large">This</hi> Motto relates to the last Coronation Medal, in which the <hi rend="large">King</hi> was <lb xml:id="l3"/>represented by a Jupiter with a thunderbolt in his hand : for Thunder <lb xml:id="l4"/>signifys War, &amp; that <hi rend="large">King</hi> was a <hi rend="large">Warriour</hi> all his life=time.</p>

        <head rend="center" xml:id="hd4"><hi rend="bold largest"/>The Device</head>
        <head xml:id="hd5">Pallas, the Goddess of Wisdom, destroying a Giant with thunder</head>
        <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par2"><hi rend="large">And</hi> it alluded to an Ancient War between the Ancestours of the <lb xml:id="l5"/>Egyptians represented by Gods (Jupiter, Pallas et cæt.<hi rend="superscript">a</hi>) &amp; their Enemys <lb xml:id="l6"/>represented by Gyants. The Gyants, to denote that they were not single persons <lb xml:id="l7"/>but great bodys of Men, were painted with many heads &amp; hands : And to <lb xml:id="l8"/>express their (a) hostile force &amp; terrour they had Skaley &amp; Snakey leggs, as Pallas <lb xml:id="l9"/>had a Snakey shield. When <hi rend="large">Jupiter</hi> was weary, <hi rend="large">Pallas</hi> came-in, &amp; <lb xml:id="l10"/>carryd-on the <hi rend="large">War.</hi></p>
        <p xml:id="par3"><hi rend="large">The Whole</hi> signifys that her <choice><abbr>Maj.<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> continues the <hi rend="large">Scene</hi> of the last <hi rend="large">Reign</hi>.</p>

        <p rend="indent0" xml:id="par4"><hi rend="large">(a) <hi rend="bold">Serpents</hi></hi> sometimes signifyd Spirits good or bad, as where the Egyptians putt Serpents <lb xml:id="l11"/>for Agathodæmons or good Spirtis; &amp; the Serpent <hi rend="bold large">Cneph</hi> for <hi rend="large">God Allmighty</hi>: <lb xml:id="l12"/>and Wee putt the Old Serpent for the Devil. Sometimes they signifyd Men, as in <lb xml:id="l13"/>Matt. 10. Be Ye wise as Serpetns. &amp; 23 Chap. <space unit="chars" dim="horizontal" extent="2"/> Ye Generation of Vipers. They <lb xml:id="l14"/>have also other significations. In the shield of Pallas they signify only hostile force <lb xml:id="l15"/>&amp; astonishing terrour ; &amp; the like signification they may have on <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Gyants leggs, &amp; <lb xml:id="l16"/>need not a reflecting Signification, unless any man be minded to make a reflection. The <lb xml:id="l17"/>Gyant in the <hi rend="large">Device</hi> may signify any Enemy with which <hi rend="larger bold">Her <choice><abbr>Maj.<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice></hi> hath or may <lb xml:id="l18"/>have War</p>
