    <p xml:id="par1">Gold &amp; Silver are assayed by refining them &amp; observing how much <lb xml:id="l1"/>they are lightned by refining. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="1"/></p>
    
    <p xml:id="par2">Silver <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="strikethrough">about <gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/>b<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del></add> is assayed &amp; refined by me<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">lti</add>ng it <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> thrice its weight <lb xml:id="l2"/>of lead &amp; keeping it in fusion till the lead fumes away <del type="cancelled">&amp; carries</del> <lb xml:id="l3"/>with the base metals<choice><sic>.</sic><corr type="delText">.</corr></choice> <add place="inline" indicator="no">&amp;</add> The silver <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> remains is fine silver. I<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">t</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">f</add> it <lb xml:id="l4"/>be refined again with thrice its weight of Lead it becomes finer <lb xml:id="l5"/>then before, <del type="over">but</del><add place="over" indicator="no">the</add> lead carr<del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add>ing away a little more of the base <lb xml:id="l6"/>metals. But silver once refined is fine silver or silver 12 ounces <lb xml:id="l7"/>fine by the laws of all Europe. And eleven ounces two penny <del type="strikethrough">weig</del> <lb xml:id="l8"/>weight of this silver melted <del type="strikethrough">in a mass</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp; well mixed</add> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice>18<hi rend="superscript">dw<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></hi> of copper makes <lb xml:id="l9"/>standard silver by the law of England. And of such a mixture <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l10"/>standard trial pieces of silver ought to be made.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par3">Gold is assayed &amp; refined by <del type="strikethrough">melting it <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> thrice its weight</del> <lb xml:id="l11"/>adding <del type="cancelled">it</del> to it twice its weight of silver &amp; melting the mixture <lb xml:id="l12"/>with thrice its weight of led till the lead fumes away &amp; <lb xml:id="l13"/>carries away with it all the base metal &amp; leaves the gold &amp; silver <lb xml:id="l14"/>alone, <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">ch</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> being hammered into a thin plate &amp; put into <del type="strikethrough">a gla</del> hot <lb xml:id="l15"/>aqua fortis, the aqua fortis eats away the silver &amp; leaves the gold <lb xml:id="l16"/>alone. If this aqua fortis be poured off &amp; fresh a<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">q</add>ua fort<del type="over">e</del><add place="over" indicator="no">i</add>s be poured <lb xml:id="l17"/>on, this second water <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">(especially</add> if it be a little stronger then the former<add place="inline" indicator="no">)</add> <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <lb xml:id="l18"/>will eat away a little more of the silver &amp; leave the Gold finer <lb xml:id="l19"/>then before. And a third water will leave it still finer, &amp; a <lb xml:id="l20"/>fourth still finer. <del type="cancelled">And</del> But Assaymasters &amp; Refiners proceed no <lb xml:id="l21"/>further then to two waters. Gold assayed or refined with two <lb xml:id="l22"/>waters is fine Gold <del type="over">i</del><add place="over" indicator="no">o</add>r Gold 24 carats <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">fine</add> by the laws of all Europe, <lb xml:id="l23"/>&amp; Eleven ounces of such fine Gold melted <del type="strikethrough">into a mass</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">&amp; well mixed</add> with one <lb xml:id="l24"/>ounce of alla<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">y</add> <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="medium">in</unclear> f</del> make standard Gold by the law of England: <lb xml:id="l25"/>And of such a mixture the standard triall pieces of Gold ought <lb xml:id="l26"/>to be made.</p>
    
    <p xml:id="par4">The standard pieces should be made by the Queens Order, as <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l27"/>Indenture of the Mint expresses, but were made the last time <lb xml:id="l28"/>(A. C. 1707) by the Lord Treasurers warrant. The Iury did not then <lb xml:id="l29"/>refine the Gold &amp; Silver but bought <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">them</add> <choice><sic>of</sic><corr>off</corr></choice> my Deputy M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Carlich<add place="inline" indicator="no">.</add> <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">They</add> <lb xml:id="l30"/>know not how he refined them, <del type="strikethrough">but</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">and</add> wondred tha<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">t</add> he could make <lb xml:id="l31"/>them so fine<del type="over">.</del><add place="over" indicator="no">:</add> <del type="strikethrough">The trial pieces Iury</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">But being generally of opinion that no gold or silver could be too fine, they made the trial pieces</add> <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">thereof <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">fo</add>r the money but absolutely</add> refused to give receipts <del type="cancelled">for</del> <del type="strikethrough">of</del> <lb xml:id="l32"/><add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">of</add> the<del type="over">ir</del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add> <del type="strikethrough">trial pieces</del> for making their plate <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">thereby</add>. And the<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">se</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Trial pieces</add> were never <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">yet</add> establish<lb xml:id="l33"/>ed under the broad seal, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> <del type="strikethrough">but being</del> as they ought to be. And <add place="supralinear" indicator="no">if</add> they <lb xml:id="l34"/>be established the Merchants will thereby lose about 4 or 5<hi rend="superscript">s</hi> in <lb xml:id="l35"/>the pound <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">t</hi></abbr><expan>weight</expan></choice> of all gold imported.</p>
