                <p xml:id="par1"><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">An ingot of</add> Gold is assayed by refining a small part of it <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">with two water</add> after the same manner <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">th</add><add place="inline" indicator="no">at</add> <lb xml:id="l1"/>Refiners refine Gold in great quantities, &amp; <del type="strikethrough">tak<unclear reason="del" cert="low">in</unclear></del> observing the <del type="strikethrough">increase or</del> decrease <lb xml:id="l2"/><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">or increase</add> of its weight by the operation. <del type="cancelled">T</del> I</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par2">If there by no increase or decrease of weight the <del type="cancelled">go</del> Ingot is reported <lb xml:id="l3"/>24 carats fine<add place="inline" indicator="no">,</add> <del type="strikethrough">&amp; there</del> it being of the same fineness <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the piece refined <lb xml:id="l4"/>by the Assay. And this is fine gold in the sense of the law of England &amp; of <lb xml:id="l5"/>all nations who practise this way of Assaying. But if there be a decrease of <lb xml:id="l6"/>weight, the decrease is observed &amp; the Ingot is reported so much coarser <lb xml:id="l7"/>then fine gold as the decrease of weight amounts unto.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par3">The Refiner makes fine gold by refining it after the same manner <lb xml:id="l8"/><del type="strikethrough">by the Refiners art</del> is a great quantity as the Assayer refines it in a small <lb xml:id="l9"/>quantity. The gold must be mixed with silver in the same proportion in both <lb xml:id="l10"/>cases &amp; <del type="strikethrough">blown of the</del> Tested <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the same  <del type="strikethrough">degree of hea</del> proportion of Lead &amp; <lb xml:id="l11"/>in the same degree of heat in both cases &amp; laminated to the same thinness <lb xml:id="l12"/>in both cases &amp; watered twice &amp; but twice with waters of the same strength <lb xml:id="l13"/>in the same proportion &amp; heat &amp; length of operation th<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>t <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> waters may work <lb xml:id="l14"/>alike in both cases, &amp; bring the gold to the same degree of finenes in <lb xml:id="l15"/>both cases, <del type="strikethrough"><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">th</unclear></del> <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">th</unclear></del> without roasting it</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par4">But it <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del> operations be not alike the gold may become finer <lb xml:id="l16"/>or <del type="strikethrough">not so</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">less</add> fine by the Refiners art then by the Assayers, that is <lb xml:id="l17"/>finer or <del type="strikethrough">coarser</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">less fine</add> then 24 carats.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par5"><del type="strikethrough">And because</del> Refiners seldome <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> re at the pains &amp; c<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">h</add>arges of making <lb xml:id="l18"/>gold so fine as it is made by the Assay, &amp; therefore the Iury <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">who makes the standard Trial</add> assays the <lb xml:id="l19"/>Refiners fine gold &amp; if it be not 24 carats fine they roast it to bring <lb xml:id="l20"/>it to a due degree of fineness. And when the trial piece is made they <lb xml:id="l21"/><del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">a</add>ssay it several times to see if it be standard. <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par6">It's possible for a Refiner to make gold finer then by the Assay. <lb xml:id="l22"/><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> &amp; a Chymist by Antimony <del type="strikethrough">makes</del> may make it still finer And therefore <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l23"/>Iury should take care that <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> fine gold be not too fine. And that it be <lb xml:id="l24"/>neither too fine nor too course they should assay it several times. <space dim="vertical" unit="lines" extent="4"/></p>
                
                <p xml:id="par7"><del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">Vpon</unclear></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del></add> <add place="lineBeginning" indicator="no">In</add> the stature of 1<del type="over"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">1</unclear></del><add place="over" indicator="no">2</add> Hen 6. C. 12, the <del type="cancelled">Assa</del> Ki<del type="over">g</del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add>gs Assayer is <lb xml:id="l25"/>called a<del type="strikethrough">n indifferent</del> person <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">indifferent</add> between the Master of the Mint &amp; <lb xml:id="l26"/>the Merchant, &amp; it is there ordeined that he <del type="strikethrough">attend weekly to</del> <lb xml:id="l27"/>be present when Bullion <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">of silver</add> is brought into the Mint that he may <lb xml:id="l28"/>rightfully set the value upon the same according to law in case <lb xml:id="l29"/>of variance between the Master &amp; the merchant. <del type="over">T</del><add place="over" indicator="no">A</add>nd therefore <lb xml:id="l30"/>I humbly pray that her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> may be put in mind of <del type="strikethrough">orde<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del> <lb xml:id="l31"/>ordeining an Assaymaster before her departure to Windsor, <lb xml:id="l32"/>And since M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> Charles Brattel is approved by both parties <del type="strikethrough">between <lb xml:id="l33"/>whom <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="3"/></del> the Assaymaster is to be</del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">as a fit</add> Arbitrator, <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">between them</add> &amp; hath carried on the <lb xml:id="l34"/>business of the Mint <del type="strikethrough">between them for some months <del type="cancelled">without</del> &amp; <unclear reason="del" cert="medium">been</unclear></del> <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">eavenly for some months without any <del type="cancelled">d<gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> variance arising</add> <lb xml:id="l35"/>between the<choice><orig><add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">said two parties</del></add><del type="over"><del type="strikethrough">m</del></del><add place="over" indicator="no">m</add></orig><reg>m</reg></choice>, &amp; <add place="infralinear" indicator="no">hath</add> been <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes"><del type="strikethrough">freely</del> <add place="lineBeginning infralinear" indicator="no">freely</add></add> entrusted <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">from time to time by the Merchants</add> with great quantities of Bullion without <lb xml:id="l36"/>any miscarriage, <del type="cancelled">&amp;</del> or complaint, <del type="strikethrough"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> &amp; if any variance or miscariage should <lb xml:id="l37"/>happe<del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">n</add> <add place="supralinear" indicator="no"><del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="2"/></del></add> it would tend to the discouragement of the coinage <del type="blockStrikethrough"><add place="inline" indicator="no">[</add>&amp; the <lb xml:id="l38"/>variance must be decided by an Assaymaster to be appointed by her <lb xml:id="l39"/><choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> before the <del type="cancelled">Mint</del> coinage can proceed<add place="inline" indicator="no">]</add></del> I humbly recommend <del type="cancelled">M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> <lb xml:id="l40"/><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del> the said M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> C. Brattel as a person well qualified <del type="strikethrough">for the said place of <lb xml:id="l41"/>Assayer</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">for the said Office</add>, in point of skill, <del type="cancelled"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="4"/></del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">diligence,</add> <del type="over"><gap reason="illgblDel" unit="chars" extent="1"/></del><add place="over" indicator="no">c</add>redit, &amp; <del type="strikethrough">equity between the said parties</del> probity.</p>

                <p xml:id="par9"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">1.</add> An order of her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ty</hi></abbr><expan>Majesty</expan></choice> &amp; Council to appoint a day for <lb xml:id="l43"/>tryall of the Pix at <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> usual place neare the star chamber</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par10"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">2.</add> The Lord Chancellour sends his Letter directed to the <lb xml:id="l44"/>Wardens &amp; Company of Goldsmiths to return <del type="strikethrough">them</del><add place="supralinear" indicator="no">him</add> the names <lb xml:id="l45"/>of an able Iury.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par11"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">3.</add> The Lord Chancellour after the return of the names sends <del type="strikethrough">t</del>h<del type="over">ei</del><add place="over" indicator="no">is</add><del type="cancelled">r</del> <lb xml:id="l46"/>Warrant by his Sergeant at Arms or his Deputy to warn the <lb xml:id="l47"/>Iury to meet at the time &amp; place</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par12"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">4.</add> The Lords at the starr-chamber do meet &amp; take their places</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par13"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">5.</add> The Pix-Box is set on the Table the Officers of <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Mint &amp; <lb xml:id="l48"/>Iury attending together <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the Exchequer Officers.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par14"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">6</add> The <del type="strikethrough">Lords being sat, the</del> Lord Chancellour calls to his Serge<lb xml:id="l49"/>ant at Arms for his Warrant for summoning the Iury &amp; <lb xml:id="l50"/>appoints the same to be delivered to the Remembrancers De<lb xml:id="l51"/>puty, who attends there with the copy of the Oath.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par15"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">7</add> The Pix Box is opened by the Officers of the Mint, &amp; the <lb xml:id="l52"/>Gold &amp; Silver therein poured upon the Table.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par16"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">8</add> The <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">Lords being sat the</add> Lord Chancellour causes the said Oath to be ad<lb type="hyphenated" xml:id="l53"/>ministred to <choice><abbr>y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi></abbr><expan>the</expan></choice> Iury.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par17"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">9</add> The Lord Treasurer appoints the standard Troy <lb xml:id="l54"/>weights &amp; the Indented Tryal pieces of her <choice><abbr>Ma<hi rend="superscript">ties</hi></abbr><expan>Majesties</expan></choice> <lb xml:id="l55"/>crown gold moneys &amp; standard silver moneys kept in the <lb xml:id="l56"/>Treasury to be delivered for the use of the Iury.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par18"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">10.</add> The Lord Chancellour recommends unto the Iury the <lb xml:id="l57"/>Making of the Tryalls of the moneys in the Pix <add place="supralinear" indicator="yes">by fire, by water, by touch or by weight or by all or by any of them &amp; particulars</add> by the said <lb xml:id="l58"/>standards of <del type="cancelled"><unclear reason="del" cert="low">their</unclear></del> Her <choice><abbr>Maj<hi rend="superscript">ts</hi></abbr><expan>Majestys</expan></choice> Treasury as well in weight as <lb xml:id="l59"/>in fineness &amp; in the most just manner that can be.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par19"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">11</add> The Lord Chancellour appoints the Iury when they <lb xml:id="l60"/>have agreed on their Veredict where &amp; what time to attend <lb xml:id="l61"/>his <choice><abbr>Lord<hi rend="superscript">p</hi></abbr><expan>Lordship</expan></choice> <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the same &amp; so departs <choice><abbr>w<hi rend="superscript">th</hi></abbr><expan>with</expan></choice> the rest of the Lords.</p>
                
                <p xml:id="par20"><add place="marginLeft" indicator="no">12</add> When the Iury present<del type="strikethrough">s</del> their Veredict to the Lord<del type="strikethrough">s</del> <lb xml:id="l62"/>Chancellour, the Remembrancer's Deputy attends to read it, &amp; <lb xml:id="l63"/>after it is read to receive it.</p>
