[A royal warrant was issued accordingly on 2 November 1706: PRO, Mint 1/8, pp. 60-61.]

Since it is in everyone's interests for the Mint engravers to be kept in practice, recommends they should be permitted to produce and sell privately gold and silver medals unrelated to state affairs. Further suggests that the master be authorised, subject to the approval of the warden and comptroller, to commission medals 'wth plain historical designs & inscriptions in memory of great actions'.

That good graving is the best security of the money & is best acquired by graving of Medals

That the Gravers being under the direction ofthe servants to yethe Mr yethe Master & Worker for coyning the money we are a Warrant be directed to him empowering him to give leave to the Gravers to make & sell such Medals of gold fine gold or fine silver as do not relate to state affairs.

And also to make such medals of fine gold or fine silver with plane historical inscriptions in memory of great actions, as do not shall be approved by the Warden Master & Comptroller & to sell them at such a price as shall be approved by allowed by them

And also to make such medals as shall be desired by the Lord H.High Tr.Treasurer or CommrsCommissioners of yethe Tr.Treasury for the time being, for rewarding persons for services done in the Treasury & by by the LdLord H.High Adm.Admiralty or CommrsCommissioners of the AdmtyAdmiralty for rewarding persons for services done at sea & by yethe LdLord H.High Chamb.Chambers for the service of his Office.

According to yoryour LordpsLordships Order of Reference signified of we have considered the Petition of yethe Gravers of the Mint hereunto annexed & are humbly of opinion that good graving is the best security of the coin & is best acquired by graving of Medals & that without exercise in such graving theey Gravers may in time lose the skill wchwhich they have hereuntoalready acquired. And considering that it is yethe Master & Workers duty to coyn the money well & that yethe Gravers of the Mint are his servants for that purpose: we are therefore humbly of opinion that a Warrant be directed to him the Master & Worker to empowering him to give leave to the said Gravers or any of them to make & sell such Medals of fine gold or fine silver as doe not relate to state affairs & upon the remit of such Medals as are intendedmade for her Majesties service for rewarding any person or persons by her Majestieys subjects for their good services, to inscribe the words DONVM REGINÆ wthwith the Date. And we are further of opinion that in the same Warrant the said Master & worker be required impowered to direc direct & require the said Gravers to & anyevery of them to make such other Medals of fine gold fine silver & good copper wthwith plain historical designes & inscriptions in memory of great actions as shall be approved by the Warden Master & Comptroller of yethe said Mint or by any other persons skilful in medals aswhom yoryour LordpLordship shall please to appoint & to make Dyes & also such other Medals &as her MajtyMajesty or any other person or persons impowered by her shall direct him the Master to make or cause to be made & also to make such Puncheons & Dyes & other instruments requisite for coining the same & to work in such tasks for making the same as he the said Master shall appoint, & to sell make sell the said Medals of such sizes he shall direct & to sell the same at such prizes as he the said Master Warden Master & comptroller or any two of them whereof the M said Master to be one shall th allow, for the workmanship besides ever & allow the value of the metalshall judge reasonable
