## De Analysi per æquationes numero terminorum infinitas.

Methodum generalem quam de curvarum quantitate per infinitam terminorum seriem mensuranda olim excogitaveram, in sequentibus brevitèr explicatam potiùs quàm accuratè demonstratam habes.

Basi AB, curvæ alicujus AD, sit applicata BD perpendicularis: & vocetur $AB=x$, & $BD=y$; & \sint/ a, b, c &c quantitates datæ; & m, {illeg} n numeri integri. Deinde

[1] Reg: I. Si $a{x}^{\frac{m}{n}}=y$, erit $\frac{na}{m+n}{x}^{\frac{m+n}{n}}=\text{Area}\phantom{\rule{0.5em}{0ex}}ABD$. Res exemplo patebit. Exemp 1. Si ${x}^{2}\left(=1×{x}^{\frac{2}{1}}\right)=y$; hoc est si $a=1=n$, & $m=2$; erit $\frac{1}{3}{x}^{3}=ABD$. Exempl 2. Si $4\sqrt{}x\left(=4{x}^{\frac{1}{2}}\right)=y$ erit $\frac{8}{3}{x}^{\frac{3}{2}}\left(=\frac{8}{3}\sqrt{}{x}^{3}\right)=ABD$. Exemp 3. Si $\sqrt{}3:{x}^{5}\left(={x}^{\frac{5}{3}}\right)=y$, erit $\frac{3}{8}{x}^{\frac{8}{3}}\left(=\frac{3}{8}\sqrt{}3:{x}^{8}\right)=ABD$. Exemp 4. Si $\frac{1}{{x}^{2}}\left(={x}^{-2}\right)=y$, id est si $a=1=n$ & $m=-2$, erit {illeg}$\left(\frac{1}{-1}{x}^{\frac{-1}{1}}$ ) $=\right)-{x}^{-1}\left(=\frac{-1}{x}\right)$ $=\alpha BD$ infinitè versus α protensæ; quam calculus ponit negativam propterea quòd jacet ex altera parte lineæ BD. Exemp: 5. Si $\frac{2}{3\sqrt{}{x}^{3}}\left(=\frac{2}{3}{x}^{\frac{-3}{2}}\right)=y$, erit $\frac{2}{-1}{x}^{\frac{-1}{2}}=-\frac{2}{\sqrt{}x}=BD\alpha$. Exemp 6. Si $\frac{1}{x}\left(={x}^{-1}\right)$ $=y$ , erit $\frac{1}{0}{x}^{\frac{0}{1}}=\frac{1}{0}{x}^{0}=\frac{1}{0}×1=\frac{1}{0}=\text{infinitæ}$, qualis est area Hyperbolæ utraqꝫ parte linea BD.

Reg II. Si valor ipsius y ex pluribus istius modi [2] terminis componitur, area etiam componetur ex areis quaæ a singulis terminis emanant.

Hujus Exempla prima S|s|unto. Si ${x}^{2}+{x}^{\frac{3}{2}}=y$ erit $\frac{1}{3}{x}^{3}+\frac{2}{5}{x}^{\frac{5}{2}}=ABD$. |Et|E|e|nim si semper sit ${x}^{2}=BF$, & ${x}^{\frac{3}{2}}=FD$; erit ex præcedenti {illeg}|R|egula $\frac{{x}^{3}}{3}=$ superficiei AFB descriptæ per lineam BF, & {illeg} $\frac{2}{5}{x}^{\frac{5}{2}}=AFD$ superf descriptæ per DF; Quare $\frac{{x}^{3}}{3}+\frac{2}{5}{x}^{\frac{5}{2}}=$ totæ ABD. Sic si ${x}^{2}-{x}^{\frac{3}{2}}=y$ erit $\frac{1}{3}{x}^{3}-\frac{2}{5}{x}^{\frac{5}{2}}=ABD$. Et si \$3$/$x-2{x}^{2}+{x}^{3}-5{x}^{4}=y$, erit $\frac{3}{2}{x}^{2}-\frac{2}{3}{x}^{3}+\frac{1}{4}{x}^{4}-{x}^{5}=ABD$.

Exempla secunda. Si ${x}^{-2}+{x}^{\frac{-3}{2}}=y$ , erit $-{x}^{-1}-2{x}^{\frac{-1}{2}}=\alpha BD$. Vel si ${x}^{-2}-{x}^{\frac{-3}{2}}=y$, erit $-{x}^{-1}+2{x}^{\frac{-1}{2}}=\alpha BD$. Quarum signa si mutaveris habebis aff{illeg}|i|rmativum valorem (${x}^{-1}+2{x}^{\frac{-1}{2}}$ vel ${x}^{-1}-2{x}^{\frac{-1}{2}}$) <2v> Superficiei αBD, modò tota cadat supra Basin ABα; sin aliqua pars cadat infra, (quod fit cùm curva decussat suam Basin inter B & α, ut hic vides in δ,) istâ parte a parte superiori subductâ, habebis valorem differentiæ. Earum verò summam si cupis, quære u{illeg}|t|ramqꝫ superficiem seorsim, & adde. Quod idem in reliquis hujus regulæ exemplis notandum volo.

Exempla tertia. Si ${x}^{2}+{x}^{-2}=y$, erit $\frac{1}{3}{x}^{3}-{x}^{-1}=$ superficiei descriptæ. Sed hic notandum est quod dictæ superficiei {partes} sic inventæ jacent ex diverso latere lineæ BD: nempe, posito ${x}^{2}=BF$ & ${x}^{-2}=FD$, erit $\frac{1}{3}{x}^{3}=ABF$ superficiei per BF descriptæ, & $-{x}^{-1}=DF\alpha$ descriptæ per DF. Et hoc semper accidit cum indices $\left(\frac{m+n}{n}\right)$ rationum basis x in valore superficiei quæsitæ sint varijs signis affectæ. In hujus modi casibus pars aliqua BDδβ superficiei media (quæ sola dari poterit, cùm superficies sit utrinqꝫ infinita) sic invenitur. Subtrahe superficiem ad minorem basin Aβ pertinentem a Superficie ad majorem basin AB pertinente{illeg} & habebis βBDδ superficiem differentiæ {illeg}|b|asium insistentem. Sic in hoc exemplo, Si $AB=2$ & $A\beta =1$, erit $\beta BD\delta =\frac{17}{6}$. Enim superficies ad AB pertinens (viz $ABF-DF\alpha$) erit $\frac{8}{3}-\frac{1}{2}$, sive $\frac{13}{6}$; Et superficies ad Aβ pertinens (viz $A\phi \beta -\delta \phi \alpha$) erit $\frac{1}{3}-1$, sive $-\frac{2}{3}$: Et earum differentia (viz $ABF-DF\alpha -A\phi \beta$ $+\delta \phi \alpha =\beta BD\delta$) erit $\frac{13}{6}+\frac{2}{3}$ sive $\frac{17}{6}$. Eodem modo si $A\beta =1$, & $AB=x$ erit $\beta BD\delta =\frac{2}{3}+\frac{1}{3}{x}^{3}-{x}^{-1}$. Sic si $2{x}^{3}-3{x}^{5}-\frac{2}{3}{x}^{-4}$ $+{x}^{\frac{-3}{5}}=y$, & $A\beta =1$; Erit $\beta BD\delta =\frac{1}{2}{x}^{4}-\frac{1}{2}{x}^{6}+\frac{2}{9}{x}^{-3}+\frac{5}{2}{x}^{\frac{2}{5}}-\frac{49}{18}$.

Deniqꝫ notari poterit quòd si quantitas ${x}^{-1}$ in valore ipsins {sic} y reperiatur, iste terminus (cùm hyperbolicam superficiem generat) seorsim a reliquis considerandus est. Ut si ${x}^{2}+{x}^{-3}+{x}^{-1}$ $=y$: Sit ${x}^{-1}=BF$, & ${x}^{2}+{x}^{-3}=FD$, ac AB $A\beta =1$; Et erit $\delta \phi FD=\frac{1}{6}+\frac{{x}^{3}}{3}-\frac{{x}^{-2}}{2}$, u{illeg}|t|pote quæ ex terminis ${x}^{2}+{x}^{-3}$ generatur: quare si reliqua superficies ββFB {sic}, quæ Hyperbolica est, ex calculo aliqua sit data, dabitur tota βBDδ.

Sin valor ipsius y vel aliquis ejus terminus sit præcedentibus magis compositus, in terminos simpliciores reducentus est, operando in literis ad eundem modum quo Arithmetici in numeris decimalibus dividunt, radices extrahunt, vel affectas Æquationes solvunt. Eodem modo si $\frac{1}{1+xx}=y$, dividendo prodibit $y=1-xx+{x}^{4}-{x}^{6}+{x}^{8}$ &c: Unde per Reg 2 erit $ABDC=x-\frac{{x}^{3}}{3}+\frac{{x}^{5}}{5}-\frac{{x}^{7}}{7}$ &c Vel si terminus $xx$ ponatur in divisore primus, hoc modo $xx+1\right)1$: prodibit ${x}^{-2}-{x}^{-4}+{x}^{-6}-{x}^{-8}$ &c pro valore ipsius y. Unde per Reg 2 erit $BD\alpha =-{x}^{-1}+\frac{{x}^{-3}}{3}-\frac{{x}^{-5}}{5}+\frac{{x}^{-7}}{7}$ &c. Priori modo procede cum x sit satis parva, posteriori cùm satis magna supponitur.
